1998 dodge dakota v8 magnum

Starts fine, but as soon as i put it in gear engine dies. I can keep it running with higher rpms and then put it in gear. once i get it going down the road it runs fine. might this be a dirty fuel filter? and if so where is the darn thing, i cant find it.

We have the same problem with our 95 Dodge Dakota. We have spend alot of money taking it in and the mechanics are not able to figure it out. We had the Idle air control replaced and the EGR valkve replaced. Now they say there is a bolt that you adjust the idle with that the head is stripped and we are unable to get it out...I guess it idles below specs say it should which could be the problem.

I had the same problem on a '98 dakota V-8. Turned out to be the throttle position sensor.

I had the same problem with my 95 Dakota. After spending almost $1000.00, found out it was a $9.00 & change water temperature sensor. It is located above the water pump.
Hope this helps!

It is not a crank sensor

If it was your crankshaft position sensor it would not run at all. Try the intake cleaning and let me know how it work and also you might have to remove the the idle air control motor and clean inside the bore of the throttle body.

Sounds like you have idle air contol problem, sounds like you need your intake cleaned .Go to your local parts store and see if they have 3 step intake cleaning kit. 3M makes a kit and so does valvoline. It should contain a can of Throttle body cleaner a bottle of intake cleaner and a bottle of fuel injector cleaner that you will have to add to your fuel tank. Or you can go to your local valvoline express lube and they can perform this service for around $50.

Check fuel filter, relay, fuel pump, sometimes the pump will run, but still too weak to run an engine at speed or underload. If fuel pressure checks out to be fine, look for a clogged catalytic converter.

I have a 1998 dodge ram 1500 5.2. It has a

sounds like you have a bad alternator the alternator generates power from the engine which in turn keeps the spark plugs firing (and all other electrical components) the higher the rpm the more power you can generate up to about 3500 rpm or so I suggest removing the alternator and bringing it to your local auto parts store to have it tested I would also bring the battery and have it charged since you don't want to put a new alternator with a less than full charge on the battery (you can damage it) WARNING:On older vehicles it was common to check the alternator by starting the engine then removing the battery terminal ... (if the engine died the alternator as bad) However on newer vehicles you could damage more important and expensive electrical components including the computer or brain of the vehicle.

I have a 1994 Dodge Dakota, no power at low rpms

yes it does if it is reading lets say lower than normal that would explain easy start up and stalling later.the coolant temp sensor has two wires .so if your car warms up and your coolant is about 200 degrees your coolant sensor might say 80 degrees .access to a scanner to check temp would be great.
