Check the coil for spark and the wires attached to the connector and the fuses also the cap and rotor and spark plug gap a worn cap and rotor or pick up coil will do it check for spark first the look at plugs cap rotor coil etc. Theses came with 4.9/5.0/5.8 motors all are similar duration spark ll ignition systems so check the easy stuff first al are fuel injected try spraying fuel are cleaner into the throttle body if it runs and dies it's a fuel issue here and check the idle air control valve they usually do the same when they go it just stops working
have you put a new set of plug wires on it. use a spark plug tester, and put it between plug wire and dist, cap. if it is sparking you will see it. if yes and not to plugs put on new plug wires. good-day ! if above checks out. remove dist, cap and see if shaft of dist, is turning. some of the hondas have a plastic type drive gear on bottom of dist, shaft. that goes bad.
this 2000 honda the wires go in like this, starting at the lestside thats cylinder #1 and then goes 2-3-and 4 as you move right, the dist cap if theres one and its not coil on plug inwhich there are no wires, the cap should be labeled 1234 and thats the way the wires go if there are no markings then you will need to find # 1 on the cap and the wires go 1342 on the cap, good luck.
then i would replace whats called the hall effect sensor its that black plastic plate you see when you take dist cap off. just pull rotor and lift up the sensor.dist cap is what holds it on.also under the sensor will be a stamped sheet metal piece that looks like the top of a castle wall. make sure its not loose on the shaft.if it is then new dist will be needed
REMOVE DIST. CAP AND CRANK ENGINE SEE IF ROTOR TURN IF IT NOT, CHECK TIMING BELT, IF IT TURNS CHECK FOR SPARK ON DIST. CAP WHERE COIL WIRE GOES IF SPARK CHANGE OUT SPARK PLUG WIRES.IF NO SPARK CHECK IGNITION COIL AND PICK UP COIL.
I will try your suggestion, although the dist cap is pretty new replaced last year and looks good inside. Thanks
