If the wire goes to the alternator, then yes. The wire from the starter relay that goes to the "S" terminal of the solenoid should not be hot. There should be a large hot wire from the battery but there may also be a hot wire from the back of the alternator. These 2 would both go on the large post of the solenoid.

The small wire should only have power when the ignition switch is in the start position. There should be no power any other time. The small wire is what energizes the solenoid which closes a set of contacts which allows power to flow to the starter motor and crank the engine over.

I have a 1992 chevy lumina 3.4L engine and I had to replace the starter. I am putting the starter in and I need to know how many wires to hook up? My dad thinks there's a wire missing.

Dual overhead cam (euro)?

the small purple wire will go to the small terminal on the starter. there should be 3-4 other wires that attached to the large terminal of the starter.

Does the 1995 Chevy Suburban have a solenoid and where is it located. thankyou

Yes it does, it is the small round canister bolted to the top of the starter. The starter is bolted to the bottom rear of the engine on the passenger side.

1995 GMC Suburban 4x4 1500

Check the wires on starter solenoid to make sure they are in the right spot. Sounds like the ignition wire terminal on the solenoid is getting constant power. I hope this helps!
