I have the same problem. How did you end up replacing the positive cables?

  • Anonymous Mar 22, 2014

The positive battery cable has several frayed places. I think I need to have the entire cable replaced is this something that I can do or should I have a garage do it?

1996 contour had same problem.remove battery.wire harness goes under battery tray to fuse block.i needed to replace the wires that were attached to positive buss bar bolted on to the positive battery cable with new 6 or 8 gauge wire.removed solder and uncrimped old wire. re crimped and soldered new wire.snaked through corrugated plastic wire protector. then one by one stripped and screwed into corresponding fuse block.larger wire to larger amp fuse.

Battery Cable End at battery?

If it is one piece & the connector is not
avail by it's self, replace the entire cable

Why did you let it get that way?

You should have NO Corrosion on a 2013 battery or you

A black wire runs directly from the battery to the starter. A second black wire runs from the starter to a 175A mega fuse that protects the alternator.

How do I replace battery cables on a 1993 ford escort?

Hi,
From what I can determine, the battery cables are part of an engine sub harness. Cost of the part is in the $300 range. However, I suspect your real problem is the connectors on the cables which attach to the battery. They should be cleaned very well, free of all signs of corrosion and tightened securely. There is a common problem of the terminals corroding and cracking / breaking. They can be replaced easily and cheaply by cutting off the old terminal(s) , stripping back (or leaving exposed) about a 1/2" of wire. If wire has any corrosion, sand down to remove corrosion. The replacement terminals should be the clamp on type that you insert the wire into the clamp connection on back of new terminal and tighten it down securing the wires to the new terminal, then attaching them back to the battery. Cost around $10, buy some anti-corrosion spray for batteries also and spray them well after installation to battery to prevent this from happening again.
NOTE: Negative or black (if color coded) should come off first. Then remove positive (red) cable. Remove both cables from battery before performing repairs. Positive (red) cable goes back on first, negative cable (black) goes on last. This will prevent you from damaging your computer system and eliminate the chance of arcing (sparking) while effecting repairs.
Hope that helps!....Mike

Contour 1996

Jumper cables have two colored cables. The red one goes from your vehicle positive battery terminal (+) to the other cars positive terminal (+)

The black goes from your negative terminal(-) to the other cars negative terminal (-)
Your car should start within 5 to 10 minutes if you have good connections.
Get your charging system checked to see if your battery is bad, or your car charging system is not working.

Starter Relay

Follow the positive battery cable to the starter relay. It is mounted on the driver's side fender. Disconnect the battery first to be safe, then simply unbolt the cables from the defective unit, put them onto the new unit, then remove the old unit from the fender, and install the new unit and reattach the battery. Here is a pic of what your relay switch looks like:
