When getting up to highway speed (beginning around 45mph) the car begins to shake and lose power. The check engine light comes on. Sometimes it will keep going an get past the issue and be fine, other times it will completely lose power and I have to pull over and start it again. I am no longer driving it on the highway. Several people have looked at it and no one can tell me what's wrong or how to fix it.
Thanks for the suggestion but there's been no problems with the anti-freeze or smoke. I've had three shops look at this car, two of which left the car with for several days. This is killing me!

Hi there, I had the same problem with my 96 Legacy Wagon, and took it to several different mechanics over several years. The car was losing power and seemingly going from 4 cylinders to 2 cylinders, and back. No one could find the problem. Finally took it to Superior Subaru in Burien, and they replaced the coil. Fixed the problem! Hi there,

Has the car been eating anti-freeze? have you noticed any smoke from the tail-pipe? if the problem hasn't been found during a routine check, it's time to look deeper. where i'm going with this is a headgasket. keep an eye on your coolant level.

May be low oil, low oil pressure (faulty oil pump) or a bad pressure switch. When your at highway speeds the pump, pumps faster & brings the oil to the right PSI. Try a thicker oil than called for, get the oil pressure checked, oil leaks? & get the switch ckd out.
Two - from experience
1. Your fuel filter is 98% clogged - something sloshes around and it goes to 100% clogged and your stop. When you stop, that last 2% falls to the bottom of the filter. You fire it up and get going - repeat.
2. Your coil pack is bad and or the wires. The coil gets hot - plastic expands - begins to arc - and you stop
1 is more likely I think, especially if the service engine light is not on.
Maybe you magnetic wheel sensors are contaminated or need replacing, that's what sends the data to the ECM. A faulty wiring could also cause sporadic occurrences when a problem acts up.
IGNITION SWITCH COULD BE BAD. SOME OF THESE KEY SWITCHES ON THE COLUMN HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO FAIL INTERMITTANTLY. I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU LOCATE THE PROBLEM. THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA AND FOR AN HONEST RATING. PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED.
Could be your torque converter.
Have you checked all your fluids?
How is your oil Pressure at that speed it should be between 40 and 60
Any Check engine Light?
Does your Abs lights come on?
