The upper rad hose bolts onto the thermostat housing. remove the housing, there is two bolts holding it on. The termostat is inside that housing. Clean the matting surfaces between the housing and the intake manifold, replace the thermostat and gasket, rebolt housing on and top up antifreeze.

Over heating during offroading

I am assuming you have the 4.3L V6 and it's 4wd. I use to have the same problem with a 96 S10. Typically when climbing hills it harder for the oil get pumped to the top of the motor, which can cause overheating. One little trick you can do is swap out the thermostat with one of a lower temp. Basically the thermostat is what controls coolant into the motor, On your Jimmy it opens at 190degree's, so no coolant flows through the motor until it hit's 190. You can replace the thermostat with one that opens at 160 or 165, this will allow more cooling time for the motor. I also had a 89 Jimmy that had this problem, infact my Jimmy overheated on the highway on hot days, I had put in a lower temp thermostat and problem solved on both these trucks.

Good Luck

Hope this helps
