you shouldn't need any special tool all you have to do is remove the caliper assembly of the rotor and the rotor should come right off. If not then the rotor should come off if a there is a nut holding it on there

Is there a rotor keeper removal tool? I was told

no, just get a pair of needle nose pliers. It should just be a lock washer on th stud. just pull the it off and discard it. They are much cheaper to replace than buying a special tool. you will then need to place a small block of wood on the back side of the rotor to keep from damaging and beat it off with a hammer. If you are replacing them instead of turning them you dont need the wood, just grab a hammer and fire away and then just recycle them.and make a buck or two.

In 2004 Impala, do I have rotor or drums?

The best way to answer you question is to tell you to take the vehicle to your nearest dealer and inquire with the parts dept. I can tell you that on the ffront of your car you have rotors and the brake used on the front is called a pad. Also your vehicle does not have a separate parking brake. It is the same as the regular rear brake no matter which type of brakes you have on the back.
