How do I remove the battery?

We bought a new battery for our 1998 Chevy S10 p/u but I feel like an idiot when I say I can't figure out how to remove the darned old battery. There are rubber covers on the pos and neg terminals, and I can't see any way to get them off or anything that is screwed on to hold them on. I've tried muscling them off, but it was a no go. I see a screw that I have to remove to take the battery out, but I have to get the cables to the pos and neg terminals off in order to get to it. Can you help please?

Thanks!
Marilee

I should have mentioned that I'm not the most mechanically minded woman out there. I'm not helpless around an engine, but I still don't get how I remove the rubber covers and then get the wires off the cables. I couldn't pull or pry them off and I didn't see anything to unscrew or loosen. The info you have given is great, but just not all the info I need.

    Thank you.

You will need a 8 mm wrench or a 5/16 wrench to remove the side terminals on the battery. you must disconect the neg. first, then the pos.....when putting the new battery in , you must connect the pos. first, then the neg.

try using a flat head screw driver to pop off the covers on the side terminals...they should pop of with very little pressure

Would someone please provide specifications for the bolts used to attach the cables to the terminals on the battery on the S10/Sonoma?
