Timing chain replacement

My neighbor told me his timing chain has been diagnosed as being noisy and needs to be replaced. My question is how hard is it to replace and what kind of time are we talking? He told me that someone told you have to pull the engine? Yes? No?

Yes you have to pull they engine to get at the timing chain sprocket and the chain casette bolt( for the r h side, this is the most common side.personally i would not worry about i people that have the same problem and the run forever without if you do this yourself you need special cam tools.

What engine do you have? if it is a 4.0 V6 then there is a recall for new cam chain tensioners to address the noise issue.

Nissan elgrand timing chain when does it need changing

Ther is no set period to replace timing chains but if it is noisy and making a lot of noise I would replace it. Sometimes by using a timing light and checking for timing as erratic flash pattern or moving timing position will indicate a loose chain.

How often to replace a timing chain on 5.2 V8 engine,95 Jeep Grand Cherokee

It should not be necessary to replace a timing chain unless it becomes noisy. As standard practice, timing chains are changed at engine overhaul, at which time adjusters and guides are normally changed too.

What are symptoms that you need a new timing belt?

basically the same as if you needed a tune up. backfires, sluggish, hard to start, won't start now power.etc. Of course it could be something else like plugs, wires, fuel filter, fuel pump, sensor, etc. Usually you end up replacing everything else and then you find out it is the timing belt/chain. You can always use a timing light to see if it is out of time, as sometimes if is slips you con adjust the distributor. Hope this helped Tim

My 1990 nissan sentra has a noisy timing chain when running idle.

Your timing chain tensioner is using oil pressure to stay tight.Could be your oil pressure is so low at idle the tensioner just can't stay tight. At the next oil change you could go for a thicker oil and see if the tensioner keeps the chain tighter at idle.

Does the Corolla 2003 model have a timming belt or chain?Does the water pump has to be changed at 70K miles? Thanks. Adrian

Until 2002 Toyota's had a timing belt. After 2002, Toyota's have a timing chain. Manufacturer/dealers recommend replacement of the timing chain at about 90,000 miles. I've talked to several mechanics - including the dealer - about the cost of changing out the chain. The lowest price I found from a very reputable mechanic is $260-270. He told me that if I brought in the part, he'd reduce the cost. The dealership was almost double!

Re: water pump: I haven't found anything that stated it must be changed at 70K miles. Hope this was helpful.
