Question about 1999 Ford Taurus

1999 ford tauras transmission and speedometer

Just recently (has happened four times) car running ok, when you are slowing down car shifts out of gear. First couple of times, car started slowing down, put car into N then back into drive car was ok. Last time was driving slow car went out of gear, put car into first gear and then back to drive car ok. What is problem. Is it trans, speed sensor or what. Also since May 2008 the speedometer (as I say) goes to sleep. You can be driving 30-40 mph all of a suddent the speedometer falls to zero You DO NOT lose power. Then eventually it goes back to the speed you were travelling. Send me an answer to cynlyn53@yahoo.com. Thanks

This car is a allwheeldrive when you pull out the car vibrates real bad till you get up 30 mph then. Quits till you slow down then accelerate back

Won't speed up while pressing on gas. I can hear the engine getting louder but will not speed up past thirty miles. The speedometer stopped working at the same time. It will move up and back down when I start the car but will not work while I am driving.

Our 2003 4 runner shifts from 3rd to low while at highway speed. Speed does not changed until car we stop or slow for a light, then max is 20mph. First time it happeded car slippped back in to 3rd and drove fine. Friend went under the car and tightened the gear linkage. Problem is it happened again and no tightening was need, but car is running fine and mechanic cannot figure out what happened.

When driving it appears that the speedometer cable is making noise from under the dash. As the car speeds up the noise if louder as you slow down the noise slows down. There is no noise when going in reverse.

Replace the speed sensor on the trans that will cause exactly what you describe is happening.

I had my pressure fluid line come loose now my transmission slips or drags 2nd to 3rd has done it for over a year changed fluids and filter didn't help it doesn't get worse but doesn't get better

This is a common problem with that make and model. It could be the speedometer gear if you notice the tach and speedometer are acting up. If that is the cause then it is easy. Most likely the issue is not related to the line coming off. It is usually a shift solenoid that is in the transmission.

I am no Honda expert, but a similar problem happened to my ex sister in-laws Ford Taurus. The speed odometer would jump around and it had trouble shifting (automatic transmission). After driving it I changed out the speed odometer sensor on the transmission and it's been fine ever since. I changed out the sensor because if the cars computer cannot tell how fast the car is traveling then fail safes in place go into effect and the computer will do it's best to keep the cars rpm's down based on the speed indicator and not let it shift or shift properly either. If it's getting false speeds then it will shut down the motor when the speed gets to high and allow it to run as the speeds fall (jumping speed odometer needle). It effects the transmission shift points also. It will either shift erratically or not shift out of say 2nd gear, so that the cars engine can't get damaged based on what signal the speed sensor is sending the computer.

Transmission front seal leaking what it cost to repair

if it is the front seal, you did not indicate whether manual or automatic, but the seal is generally 15-20 bucks, its the labour time that costs the most, my suggestion is if its manual, possibly think of doing the clutch at the same time, or if its automatic, having a tourque converter service as well

Transmission problem?

Could possibly be the transmission ecu. If the TCU (as it's known on some cars) Transmission Control Unit, is going bad or is bad it could cause the transmission to drive funny including irragular shifting, different gear ratios and so on. Depending on your vehicle make there may be ways to determin if its the transmission computer or not. Also double check your transmission fluid level...make sure it's at normal operating temerature and that the car is running and on level ground when u check the dip stick. Hope this helps, good luck

99 Mercury sable speedo/tranny

VSS (vehicle speed sensor) Tells the PCM (computer) the speed of the vehicle so the PCM can make the proper information to the TCM (transmission control module) to shift.
YOU are goin gto need a scan tool NOt a code reader to monitor the VSS to see what it is putting out for speed when the car is moving But I believe you need a VSS but do not not Go out and buy one until you have had it tested , and can positively confrim it is bad first. Please rate this a fixya if you find this advice helpful, Thanks Randy
