Question about 1997 Chevrolet Suburban

1 Answer

Shock absorber Dear sir I have a very nice chevy suburban 1997, I have changed the front and the back shock absorbers, I have bought them from the dealer based on the car body number? After then the car starts to experience some vibrations when going through rough roads. When I go over high speed breakers fast, I hear some sound like a blow, as if the shock absorber dosed not withstand the car weight and the big hit. Can you please tell the exact brand and specifications of th needed shock absorbers. Regards, Bassam

    Dear Sir

The car is 1997 Chevrolet Suburban K1500 LS, it is a two wheel drive. I do not know about the weight, I think it is standard.

Thank you very much for your kind cooperation.

I have a 2009 Chevy Tahoe with clunking concern. A tech at a shop examined and concluded the front shocks are going bad with leaking on the front shocks, and recommended to replace them. He said they are...

shock absorbers are an integral part of the safe driveability of the vehicle
shock absorbers with oil leaks are failed and should be replaced asap
suggest that you get firm with the dealer and demand that they be replaced if you have an extended warranty that covers the items
read the warranty as many extended warranties only cover engine and drive train and not what you have been lead to believe
which ever what happens the units need to be replaced
it is a strut type suspension it will also affect tyre wear

Chock absorber very strong drops , the car id unstable on the road and if there is even a small change one the road its jumps up and down very stronly , even the tea cub will jump from holder

check your shocks look to see if they are wet looking if not that does mean that there not bad if you push down on the car easliy then you have a shock proplem replace the shocks and also check the sway bar, bushings and sway bar end links if they are worn out they can make your car fill unstable also. hope this help good luck.

How to replace front shock bsorbers

This is for the 2WD model:

    2-Wheel Drive
    1. Raise and support the front of the vehicle safely using jack stands.
    2. Using an open end wrench, hold the shock absorber upper stem to prevent it from turning, then remove the upper stem retaining nut, the retainer and rubber grommet.
Common front shock absorber mounting-2WD vehicles

    1. Remove the shock absorber-to-lower control arm retaining bolts and lower the shock absorber assembly from the bottom of the control arm.
    2. Inspect and test the shock absorber; replace it, if necessary.
    To install:
    1. Fully extend the shock absorber stem, then push it up through the lower control arm and spring so that the upper stem passes through the mounting hole in the upper control arm frame bracket.
    2. Install the upper shock absorber nut and tighten to 100 inch. lbs. (11 Nm) on 1994 models 145 inch lbs. (16 Nm) on 1995 models, 54 ft. lbs. (73 Nm) on 1996 models, or 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm) on 1997-99 models while holding the stem with an open end wrench. Be careful not to crush the rubber bushing.
    3. Install the shock absorber-to-lower control arm retaining bolts and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm) on 1994-95 models and 54 ft. lbs. (73 Nm) on 1996 models, or 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) on 1997-99 models.
    4. Remove the jack stands and carefully lower the vehicle.

My 2003 Z71 Suburban's rear springs are getting worn out. Is there anywhere I can go to get new springs other than the dealer? Would the front springs from an Express 2500 fit?

there are spring companies that have heavier springs, google chevy truck springs and see what comes up. I dont know about the 2500 springs, maybe??

The shocks are electronic and very expensive. Changed mine last year, the fronts were $87.00 each and thr rear $125.00 each. They could only be purchased from the dealer. Haven't seen any online. They have a connection at the top that monitors the pressure or something.
