Question about 2002 Volkswagen Beetle Turbo S

2002 VW Beetle turbo

My beetle seems to make a noise when I decelerate. It is coming from the back. I thought there might be something rolling around in the back, but there was nothing there. It is almost like a swishing/sliding noise.
Any ideas? It is short, but pretty loud.

Same problem same year. I checked the hatchback. It is hard to pinpoint where it is coming from. Will check around rear seatbelts next.

I did some more research online and realized that they do indeed come with retractable spoilers.

There is actually a switch under the steering column that you can push to see it come out. It seems the mechanism that pushes it out and in was dry, so we bought some sort of grease and put it on it. It is much better now. I also read that you can use crayons to wax it as well. Hope this helps.

Check out the New Beetle review posted on Modern Racer (URL below).  Also search the CARS.COM website for 2002 New Beetle, read the Expert Review from Bob Golfen (posted 19.Jan.2002).  Both articles confirm the annoying noise from the retractable rear spoiler.

Ok we figured something out. The turbo model has a rear retractable spoiler that flips up when you go above 45 mph and down when you go below 10. The later models just have a fixed spoiler. Still looking into if it should make that loud 'ratchety' sound.

Loud noise folled by loss of power

In order to run a turbo you have to have low compression in your cylinders. when you drive to aggressively you can blow you turbo out and you car will have no power at all. A turbo pushes air into you intake in order to get that power. if it goes out your engine will run like its 30 years old and blown. get a new turbo. take care and good luck.

Fuse box diagram for a 2000 vw beetle

There should be a diagram in your Owner's Manual. I have one for my daughter's 1998 Beetle that should be the same as in the 2000 Beetle. Can email it to you if you post an email address that I can send it to.

2002 vw beetle less than 50K;check light came on, car diagnosed needed coil and plug wires which was done; 3 wks later w/25 mi more; engine light came on today; not blinking but completely on; any thoughts

THIS COULD BE SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS A LOOSE GAS CAP. TAKE IT TO A PARTS STORE WHERE THEY WILL CHECK THE CODES FOR FREE. I WOULD CALL THEM TO CONFIRM FIRST. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE MECHANIC DIDN'T DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM CORRECTLY. HOPE THIS HELPS. GOOD LUCK

this is not good; you probably ran the turbo bearings dry and they have seized try to loosen the turbo by removing it breaking it loose and lubricating the bearings if they are still good or, find another one at the junkyard
