The latch needs to be replaced and then inspected. If still the same problem with new trunk latch then computer needs to be reset by dealer resetting tool.------------ May be dealer will reset the computer with the reprogramming tool and that will clear the issue. And that should help. Thanks for the update.Helpmech.
There is a more than likely a little spring causing the issues. the spring is unable to move
pass a stop. all you have to do is bend the spring a little on the end
making the ID smaller.
In the picture you can see all of the insides. The little red switch is what
lights up the MFD. when the spring in messed up the switch can not be
pressed in 100%
When you look at yours you should see the spring in the wrong spot. when it is like this it won't reset the system.
Take a pair of small pliers and make that last ring smaller. It is still round.
Oops, I guess you need the pictures

Disconnect the battery from car terminals, wait for 5 minutes, and reconnect back the battery in order to reset the central locking sysstem & trunk latch.
Be sure that the trunk hood locking hook is not closed with the trunk hood opened. Push back the locking hook if necessary. Test the trunk if it stays closed.
If not, you should access the central locking ECU (Electronic Control Unit) using VAS, VAG-Com or similar diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car in order to erase all faults memored & reset the central locking system.

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
You may just have a system failure. As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you remove the positive battery connector and let it sit for at least 5mins. before reconnecting it. This will reset the system and can get your trunk action back to it's normal operation.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

I left the positive lead disconnected for about 10 minutes; problem still exists.
A fes things:
1 - the car is a Passat, not a Jetta (if that makes a difference), and
2 - I have neither of the diagnostic tools you suggest. That being the case, I'll have to bring the car to a mechanic for diagnosis and repair.
3 - looks like you now suggest removing both battery leads, so I'll give that a go and hope for the best.
I guess this makes sense, though I don't see the connection between using the latch for a tie-down anchor and having an encased spring slip off.
so, I've accessed the part; how do I break it open? Brute force with a screwdriver? Not sure I want to go ahead and do this; please advise.
Update - got the part apart, adjusted spring as it had slipped; removed battery leads to allow computer to reset as had been previously suggested; no luck. 3 hours working the options so far; cannot justify more time/failed attempts. I'll bring it to the dealer tomorrow.
In spite of the multiple trys by your advisors, I ended up bringing the car to the dealer who replaced a part ($49), not the whole latch as had been suggested. Car now fixed. As I understand it, I will not be invoiced; true?
Thanks -
Daniel
