Hi, I bought a used 626 which runs great but grinds while rolling and shimmies somewhere in the wheels when brakes are applied. I think the calipers are not opening, or the discs are damaged. Two repair shops said the brakes were OK but I think they only looked at the pads.
Any idea how hard those are to repair/replace for someone who is a bit mechanical but hasn't done brakes before?

I would recommend replacing the Brake Rotor's. It is not to hard to change those out. If you pick up a Chilton's repair manual it will walk you through all the steps changing them. Now you will not be able to tell if the rotor's are warped just by looking at them you will just need to change them out.

4x4 ? how many miles ? jack front wheels off ground and rotate by hand feel for the grind, bad wheel hub bearing? check brake rotor dust shields, If high miles possibly front carrier or pinion bearing. Just replaced front , rear , and transfercase bearings on my 98 with 193,000 mi. And yes,they were all bad $500.00 did labor myself. did rear first as it was humming, week later grind and hum coming from front, then couple days later transfer case was also whinning,humming, good god what a project all that was but today its great and quiet.
Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
NOTE: The wheel bearings are not serviceable. If the bearings are bad, a new hub/bearing assembly must be installed.
Remove or disconnect the following:

Brake drum, if equipped
Rear caliper and rotor assembly from the hub, if equipped
Hub dust cover
Raise the staked portion of the hub retaining nut with a hammer and chisel.
Remove or disconnect the following:
Hub retaining nut and discard it
Hub and bearing assembly from the spindle
Fig. 2: When installing the new hub nut, be sure to stake it into the notch on the spindle
Install or connect the following:
Bearing assembly on the spindle. Torque the new nut to 131-173 ft. lbs. (177-235 Nm)
if you have warped rotors and brake gently you may not feel the shimmy,but will if braking hard.i would fit new rotors and while the wheels were, off also adjust the wheel bearings, if needed.that way you have elliminated two of the most common causes of shimmy.
If it shimmies with the brakes applied, it's a rotor problem....but like you say, it shimmies just at a certain speed with no brakes applied, check tires for out-of-roundness. If they look ok, you are looking at a balance problem with the tires.
Sounds like warped rotors and worn pads or a worn front end or both. Most shops will check this for free I believe. If it were something like wheel bearings, or rear end you would likely notice this at lower speeds as well with out the brakes being applied. So the direct answer to your question is "Maybe, maybe not". Gee, that was helpful was'nt it?
