1994 Dodge Spirit Automatic Transaxle

My 94 Spirit had a transaxle rebuild 3 years ago, the car has 239,000 mi on it.  It sat for about 8 months, not driven, now it starts out fine, shifting well, but after driving it awhile, gets hot I guess, and will not shift into 3rd gear.  1&2 fine but not 3rd.  Does this vehicle have a Shift Sensor?  Please Help!

If the engine is 2.5l 4 cylinder it is not electrically controlled (3 speed), though it does have a speed sensor, it controls engine idle only. Only the 3.0l V6's are (4 speed) and are notoriously failure prone. Change the fluid and filter for starter's, use Chrysler trans fluid. If you have the 3 speed, I assume you do, you likely have a corrosion seizure which may break itself free after some use. Just take it easy and see if it comes loose by itself.

Yes the computer uses TPS (throttle position sensor) and VSS (vehicle speed sensor) sensors information as well as fluid temp and other factors to determine shift points based on the info stored in the PROM (memory) IC chip, if it is not shifting then you either have a poor connection at the trans case electrical connector or a sticking shift solenoid inside the trans, I would pull the trans connector off and make sure it is clean and properly installed, look for a broken connector retainer as well, this is very common and can cause a loss of signal from the PCM (power train control module) module to the transmission shift solenoids. Most likely the 3rd gear shift solenoid is sticking off from sitting so long, had this happen on my truck, cleared itself.

You don't do a transaxle in your driveway

You can't get the vehicle up high enough to
support the engine & swing the sub frame clear

Need a trans shop with a lift

To rebuild that, it would cost twice what the vehicle is worth

How do i rermove the transmission from a 1994 dodge spirit 2.5 L engine

I suggest that you get the vehicle specific manual for the exact process but here's the general idea:

Remove:
The hood, the front axle nut on both sides, the tie rod ends, and ball joint, as much of the brake system and suspension as necessary to get the axles removed.

Then, with it up in the air on sturdy ramps:

CV Axles (making sure to put blanks in their place to prevent anything in the transaxle from slipping out of place, the starter, shift linkage, grounding straps/wiring harness, shift cables, speedo cable or wiring as applicable, sometimes both, any lines going to the transaxle. Hydraulic clutch lines if a manual and trans fluid lines if an automatic.

You'll need to loosen the motor mounts and possibly the hoses to the engine as you may need to tilt the engine downward to get the trans. released and have room to pull it out.

You should have everything out of the way, a hoist over the engine/trans compartment hooked to a sling around the transaxle to lower it and remove it from the bottom side once you remove the transmission mount and the bellhousing bolts.

There is a bar designed to hold the engine in place so that it doesn't twist too much, you'll have to fabricate a means from underneath or above to keep it from tilting too far.

I'm an older guy and I can do one of these jobs in about 5 or 6 hours these days. (Lord help me the next day though.)

This is why you really need an illustrated step-by-step manual for your vehicle. It's a detailed time consuming job.

Keep a pan handy for holding nuts & bolts, springs & clips.

Good luck.

Clogged coolant passages in engine block and head.
Possibly clogged radiator. Check radiator fan on-time.
if clogged, use a heavy duty cleaner. Check timing.

Your transaxle is the transmission. Just a different term for it in a front wheel drive.
