Hello timing takes some experience from what your explaining sounds like your on the wrong compression stroke what you need to do is pull #1 spark plug while someone clicks not start put your thumb over until you feel compression push off then get a screw driver put into the cylinder you want to see were the pistons at you want it almost at the top now go to your timing mark at your crank pulley your pointer should be turned to tdc re align your camshaft marks reinstall belt turn motor by hand or click turn recheck lineup of marks if okay reinstall plug try to start goodluck
