http://mattwindsurfs.wordpress.com/2007/12/30/gm-pass-key-ill-pass/

from the above site:

It worked well for me for about ten years, but I finally got fed up with not being able to start my own car with my own key. I don’t like to get screwed on car repairs, so here’s what happened. I used Google for a while and found some websites with more information than I really needed, and I read it all. If you are having the same problem, you have probably figured out what is going on. You turn the key. The car doesn’t start, but the ‘SECURITY’ indicator blinks. You give up, and it stays lit. You know that the little resistor in the key is not making good contact. You can go Google for those other sites as well, but you really don’t need all the information they give. I had been putting off the job because I thought I was going to have to crack open my steering column. This was not the case. Here’s how it worked on my 97 Camaro:

  1. Go to the electronics store and pick up a cheap multimeter. Open the box in the store and try to read your key with it. Quickly discover that this one is a total piece and you shouldn’t have wasted your money on it. Good thing you didn’t. Close the box and spend $50 on a real nice overkill version with auto-ranging. It’s still less than the $500 model.
  2. Leave the store and measure the resistance of the key in the peace and quiet of the hurting car. In my case it’s 886 Ohms. I’m no expert, but I bet GM picked values that don’t match up with widely available resistors.
  3. Well the store has 820. Will it work? I didn’t have the table I found online with the ranges about each of the 15 possible values in pass key. That’s OK. 1/(1/8200+1/1000) = 891. This is the resistance of an 8.2 kOhm and a 1 kOhm resistor in parallel. Don’t make this as hard as I did. Bring a calculator, or at least a pen. Buy the resistors and a 40W soldering iron.
  4. Here’s the action: twist the leads on the resistors together and solder them. Get down under the steering while and take all the screws out of the trim. Pull pretty hard on the trim to get it off.
  5. Literally the first thing you see is an orange wire coming out of the bottom of the steering column, housing two white wires. It’s plugged into another pair. One is black and white, and the other is purple and white. That pair is the car side. Cut it. Strip the ends and jury-rig twist the strands around the ends of the resistor.
  6. Try to start the car. It works. Try to start it again. It works again. Sweet. If it doesn’t work for you, go back to math and maybe buy more resistors. Better to get it close the first time.
  7. Solder each end of the newly-parallel resistors to one of those wires. Let the orange wire hang. Ensure a good solder job so there won’t be problems in the future. Wrap the whole thing in electrical tape and put the trim back on.
  8. Start the car again it works. Try again. It works again.
This is much better than having to try 6 times, waiting 4 minutes between each attempt, when I’m already late for work. I am thrilled to know that when I go to start my car tomorrow morning it will not be a 50/50 chance.

Security light flashes yellow then red. Please Help!

For some odd reason Chevy sometimes has there stereos connected to the security system. Check the fuse to make sure it didn't blow. You probably have vats security which is the worst thing ever made. I had that on my 02 firebird and had nothing but vats issues constantly.

97 Chevrolet Lumina. Won't start. Lights, horn, radio all work. Tried jumpstarting. Still nothing. Tapped starter and it started but cuts right off. Noticed Security light flashing. Checked all...

You have a security issue going on. Try turning the key to the on position and leave it on without trying to start the car. Wait about 10 minutes and the light will stop flashing and come one solid. Then try to start the car. Turn the key to the off position. Wait 60 seconds and then turn the key to the on position. See if the light is still flashing. If it is then try the process again. If it isn't flashing and it is on solid then start your car.

Security light is flashing. car will not start on my 2003 oldsmobile alero

I OWN a 2001 Olds Alero and the same thing happens to mine.. It's an easy fix..
1. Turn the Key to ACC (keep it in this mode for the entire 10 minutes).
2. The security light on the Dashboard will flash for exactly 10 minutes..
3. Once the 10 mins are over, the security light will stay solid..
Wait for the red light to disappear off the dashboard...
YOU ARE NOW READY TO TURN YOUR CAR OFF AND RESTART YOU CAR....

SIMPLE FIX..
I DO THIS ALL THE TIME TO MINE..

I have a nissan interstar van and when i turn the key to start it up there is a red light that pulses fast and the engine ticks over but does not start. after turning the key on and off for a while it...

Your problem is most likely that the battery is not supplying enough power to the engine. This is either because the battery is going dead or your battery cables aren't connecting properly. Check the connections. The red light that is flashing probably has a picture of a battery in it.

Flashing alarm light after battery change. Car wont start,

System operation
System arms 5 seconds after switching ignition OFF. Switch ignition ON. Ensure clock LED illuminates for 3-5 seconds. If LED flashes rapidly at regular intervals for approximately 1 minute, then flashes at irregular intervals: Key code not recognised. Remove key and try again.
Programming
When
System malfunction: LED illuminates for 1 minute, then flashes at irregular intervals. Key(s) added or replaced.
NOTE: Replacement keys MUST have blue mark. Keys with red mark are NOT compatible with this system.
How
NOTE: Programming method using vehicle keys can be deactivated using diagnostic equipment.
Obtain 2 programmed keys (A and B). Insert key A into ignition switch. Turn ignition switch to position II. Wait 1 second. Switch ignition OFF. Remove key A. Insert key B into ignition switch within 5 seconds. Turn ignition switch to position II. Wait 1 second. Switch ignition OFF. Remove key B. Within 10 seconds: Insert key to be programmed into ignition switch. Turn ignition switch to position II. Wait 4 seconds. Switch ignition OFF. Wait 5 seconds. Start engine. I need to shut off my alarm on a gm taho with no remote

It will take about 30 minuites to do all you need to do is have your dealer cut a new key then use the new key and turn the key to start then leave the key in the on position the theft light will either be on solid or be flashing (the engine will not start this is normal)leave the key in the no position and do not turn it off untill the light either stops flashing or turns off then turn off the key and try to start the vech then wait untill the light turns off or stops flashing do this for a total of 3 times you must wait untill the light stops flashing or goes to solid or it will not work this can take as long as 30 min so make shure that the battery is good and fully charged.

Immobiliser is not turning off and not allowing the engine to start

is it a stick immobiliser?
If your vehicle does not start and the LED continues to flash while the Ignition is 'ON', this means that the Immobiliser system has not recognised the transponder stick.
Simply turn the Ignition 'OFF' then back 'ON' again. If the Status LED continues to flash, move the transponder stick closer to the key barrel until the LED stops flashing and turns 'OFF'.
If the transponder stick on the key ring does not disarm the immobiliser or the
transponder stick is misplaced, you can override the system by entering a 5-digit override number. Each vehicle has a unique 5-digit override number. This number is recorded on the
customer’s owner’s manual. If the customer loses their owner’s manual / override number, the number can be found by locating the vehicle’s Daewoo Stock Number (D.S.N). The customers override number is the last 5 digits of their D.S.N.
9748811.jpg
Overriding the system using the example 5 digit code 2,1,0,6,2
Important Note: 10 flashes of the Status LED represent the number ‘0’.
1. Remove the Transponder from the Key Ring.
2. With the system armed (LED flashing slowly) Turn the ignition ON/OFF 5 times, with the final position being off.
3. The LED will turn solid red for 2 seconds and then begin to flash.
4. When the LED flashes twice (2), turn the ignition ON. (number 2 was entered)
5. Turn the ignition OFF and wait for the LED to flash once (1) and then turn the ignition ON. (number 1 was entered)
6. Turn the ignition OFF and wait for the LED to flash ten (10) times and then turn the ignition ON. (number 0 was entered)
7. Turn the ignition OFF and wait for the LED to flash six (6) times and then turn the ignition ON. (number 6 was entered)
8. Turn the ignition OFF and wait for the LED to twice (2) and then turn the ignition ON.(number 2 was entered) The LED will turn solid red, which means the system is now overridden and the vehicle can be started. If an incorrect number is entered in, wait 11 flashes then start the procedure again.
NOTE: This is a one-event override. Once the ignition is turned off, the vehicle will passively immobilise after 30 seconds. If your 5 digit override number does not override the system, the chances are that you entered the wrong number. If this is the case, you’ll need to re-enter the override number
and try it again.
