Question about 1997 Lincoln Town Car

1 Answer

Shifting problem No warning everything was working fine till it happened. The automatic trany is still working with the exception of the higher gears. It will shift smoothly until it gets to 45 miles an hour. Then when it goes to shift into the next higher gear it doesn't shift. It's like the clutch engages but no shift so the trany is dis-engaged. You can rev the engine and nothing. It drops below 42 and the trany re-engages. Got any ideas????

Hello this could be a problem in the drive band from what you explained you can try a bottle of shifting treatment its possible it could be a port in the valve body stuck for drive if this doesnt help theres a good chance drive band is gone and tranny needs to be rebuilt goodluck

may need a transmission or overhaul that one so take it easy on it. changing the fluid and filter may help but sounds like the valve body is dirty and the trany cant shift like a new one.

The shift solenoids may not be getting the correct signals from the transmission control module . Read the codes to see if it's the solenoids or the module.

Both are possible but from your description it sounds like the truck is in limp home mode. You need to put a scanner on it and see if any codes are set. Then repair the code and reset it then see what happens.

.The seal that keeps fluid inside the transfer case and thus the transmission is vital for the smooth operation of the vehicle's transmission. When fluid is leaking from a broken seal, it reduces the volume of fluid that is currently working inside the transmission. A loss in fluid pressure also occurs, which will make shifting gears more difficult for an automatic or manually shifted transmission. If you notice that your transmission is having difficulty shifting to higher or lower gears, you should contact a certified mechanic as soon as possible to inspect this problem and offer a solution.

Automatic transmission< while in drive wont shift

change your transmission filter: no or, very little movement and, no shifting indicates a clogged hydrolic circuit
do not continue to drive your car at that rpm until you fix this as engine damage can occur

Gear problem

Hi! chefcato36
I am just guessing but is this an automatic transmission? If the automatic transmission oil / coolent is old or low, the transmission will not work correctly. If the trany fluid is more then 5 years old the oil and filter need to be changed.

Problem solved!!

I had a tuner go over the wiring. He found a loose ground wire and grounded it properly. The transmission has been shifting correctly ever since!!! It felt like a mechanical problem, and acted like a mechanical problem, but it was just a loose ground wire.

Let this be a heads up on VW transmissions!

Thankfully it was only a loose ground wire and not a $5,000 trany!!
