Speedometer is OK till the engine reaches normal operating temperature. After that it keeps bouncing around. Speed sensor has been changed once but made no difference. If any one has a solution, please post!

I have about the same problem. I had my speed sensor replaced 2 yrs ago on my 2002 jetta and now my speedometer has started to not work again. It will work for a little while then start to bounce down to zero and sometimes stay there for up to 30 seconds at a time. It has increasing gotten to be longer stretches of time not working over just the last week. Any help???

I have same problem.  Speedometer works till about 60 then begins to waver around.  can't use cruise control obviously.  i'm wondering if its somethign with the transmission or if whole speedometer needs replacing, not just sensor..

My used to bounce around till the engine got warm. Now it's always bouncing. Dealer said it's the sensors gearing inside the differential (tranny) and $1100 !

Same here.. got a 2001 and the sensor has been changed TWICE.. I dont the cash to drop on it being "repaired" at the tran side..

seems VW has issues they arnt fessing up to!

The plastic speedo gear on the differential breaks, differential has to be removed, and new bearing and drive gear pressed on.. can be repaired with trans in the vehicle

Speedometer bounces when I drive. It seems to be the output sensor when I look at it while its running and in gear the output part is not spinning. I cant find the part

Spinning? This is an electronic magnetic sensor so it has no moving parts. If this is an older car with a cable operated speedo I would not call the output section a sensor, but rather the cable drive. A broken cable can make the speedo bounce, and if you disconnect the cable to look at the end of the drive unit you may be looking at a cable input guide which does not move vs. the internal part which spins. With cable removed, spin the inner part by fingers while helper views speedo. Does it move (try both directions). If cable is broken you can buy a universal repair kit.

Does 1992 Olds 88 have speedometer or speed sensor

Could be the speedo head the transducer is in the gear box or if it has a cable remove cable and grease.

You may need another speedometer. The speed sensor sends a signal to both the speedo and the odometer. So if the sensor fails, both meters would stop working.
The speedo gets power from the same circuit as the warning lights.

Speedometer bounces from current speed down to zero (where it sometimes sticks)

It won't be a cable, as it's impossible for a cable driven speedo to perform this way.
It's an electronic speedo.

Check and/or replace the speedo sensor in the gearbox housing.

Speedometer quits working and the sensor has been

when the sensor was installed it was installed wrong.
They wired it into the turn signal feed.
have your dealer or, an auto electrician fix the wiring to your sensor.

How do I find and replace the speedometer cable? It is intermitently working. The speedometer needle tends to "bounce" around a lot.

You may not have a cable on that is most likely electronically controlled...have your vehicle speed sensor checked out,,,,if its good you may have a bad speedo

1995 honda accord speedometer and odometer not working

Sounds like either your speedometer cable, your nylon gear on the side of the tranny where the cable ties in, or the odometer itself is shot. One of those three will set you straight. If you are able, remove the cluster, take the cable off the back, and pull it out of the sheath. You will see if its broken or not from there. If not, slide it back into the sheath, then you have to find out where the sheath meets the tranny, and pull it off of there. Then, you can get someone else to watch the speedo as you turn the cable from the bottom. If it works, great, if not, then its your cluster/odometer/speedo. If it does work, the small gear in the transmission is shot.

99 Malibu all of a sudden my speedometer started bouncing wildly

I'm not 100% sure but your problem may be a speed sensor.  This is just a sensor that monitors how fast the tires are moving.  These are usually easy to change.  They require usually one or two bolts to be removed and an electrical plug.  But as to the location of yours, I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it mounts somewhere on the transmission (transaxle.)
Any questions, just ask!!! Please rate!!!  Thanks

Intermittent speedometer failure

Try replacing the speedometer sensor, located on the transmission under the car. There will be a few wires going to it with a plug. The speed sensor is a retivly low cost part, and most of the time when it begins to quit it will give irratic readings on the dash.
Hope this helps!
