Question about 2002 Dodge Intrepid

Clapping noise coming from right side head.

Assumed that I had a collasped lifter, replaced all lifters and rockers, still have noise. Noise is not a lower end i.e. rod bearing noise. The performance of the car does not seem to be affected. Any ideas

Dodge neon 2.0 L sohc how to remove lifters from rocker arms

Ok here is the deal, the lifters are poorly designed and prone to noise or "tick", the way to silence this is not just new lifters but new rocker arm assemblies which include new lifters. Use the best parts not the cheapest ones, factory new one are improved from previous designs. If you still want to just replace the lifters you must take the rockers to a machine shop and have the lifters pressed out and replaced by them. Another suggestion is if you live in a warm climate use 10W-30W synthetic oil.

Ticking sounds engine

Without hearing the noise I can only guess. Probably a hydraulic lifter. Many 50s, 60s and 70s engines had this problem. Varnish builds up in the lifter body. If it's just a SLIGHT tick, I wouldn't worry about it. You could try a different brand of oil and some engine cleaner.

As an aside, I personally own a 91 GMC pick-up with a 4.3. It had a clicking lifter on start up and 10 min after. I always used Castrol oil, supposedly one of the best. Switched to Penzoil, it was on sale. No more click!

If you want to try and un-stick it, try this. Be forewarned, it WILL make a mess! Try and locate which side of the engine the noise is coming from. Remove the valve cover. Inspect for bent pushrods and rocker arm stud pulling out of the head. If you find either of these problems, disassemble the whole valve train and inspect/replace worn parts. Back then, Pontiacs and SBCs were notorious for studs pulling out of the head if you ran them hard.

Start engine. Oil will spray/mist everywhere. You were warned. LOL
Watch the rocker arms as it idles. If one does not move as far as the others, and the click is more of a bang, you have a collapsed lifter. A worn cam lobe will be much more quiet than a collapsed lifter, but you will see decreased movement of the rocker arm. Replacement is the only option on both.

Take a RUBBER (not metal ) or plastic dead-blow hammer and rap the rocker arm(s) several times where the pushrod mates with it. Over the years I have used this method with approx 60% success.

06 A6 pet 2.0T very loud engine noise at bulk-head side of rocker

ur car uses hydrolic lifters instead of tappets but they sound the same when faulty. most likely a 'sticky' lifter. very expensive to change.

I put a 2.2 head from a 96-98 s10 on my 97 pontiac sunfire 2.2 and when i torque the rockers to 22 ftlbs it wont run but if the rockers are almost all th way loose it will run but missing real bad

there may be a height difference on the head/valves
and spacersunder the rockers may help or the
lifters are not releasing properly and you should take them apart and/or collaspe them and clean them if possible..also try putting the smaller of the rods and lifters on the heads or from the original head.

Lifters are knocking and there is a missing in

lifters tick and noise is upper end of engine if lifters are making noise could be from a bad valve, bad lifter ,push rod ,oil pressure, rocker arm - need to take do compression test find out if valve problem and which cylinder is problem also take off valve cover and check for proper oiling of valve head and look to see if and are damaged or loose-------a knocking sound usually comes from lower end of engine, rod knock etc.and thats usually rebuild of engine

Need to know if I can adjust the valves on 86 Ford Escort

normally they are not adjustable, look at your rocker arms, do they have a nut and screw threaded into them? if not they are not adjustable, are having trouble with lifter tapping noise? this happens to not adjustable valve engine due to lifter wear, the hydraulic lifters lose their ability to hold oil pressure so they create space instead of elimanating space, and should probably be replaced. Hope this helps, let me know

89 Ranger 2.9L 150k mi. Lifter noise, power lose, oil pres zero

the lifter noise might have been a bearing going bad or a piston ring. if you lost power you probably lost compression on one cylinder. Try checking your compression with a compression tester screwed into your spark plug socket. here is a site with a procedure.

86 ford lifters

i would suspect that your lifters are weak therefore the noise .or the rocker arms need adjustment i would try adjusting them to specs and see if that solves it, if not either the lifters are weak and need replaced or your cam lobes are worn. if you have to replace the lifters you must replace the cam as well . please rate this thanks
