The security system (VATS/PassKey) is having problems, it's typical on those cars and it will gradually prevent the car to start anymore. You can find a great write-up here: http://newrockies.ca , this has been the only thing that saved my Park Avenue.

is your security light staying on? I would guess you need an ignition lock cylinder.

What does it mean when the red "security light comes on while I am driving?

The security, antitheft or lock picture/icon is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car misinterprets this as an attempt at theft and goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. This is why the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle. This link explains it pretty well.

Remember too, the TDM controls the security light. Sometimes you can have ALL the symptoms and no lights.

At first, security light would come on while driving and eventually would go off on its own. Sometime after, when trying to start, security light stayed on. I'd turn it off, wait 3 minutes, and try...

Could be the key itself, the lock cylinder, or the Theft Deterrent Module that controls the whole system. This link explains the system and offers a very good way to just bypass the system permanently...

Bad ignition switch or an adjustment. Your talking, electrical switch here, not the key cylinder.

Everything works in the car but car doesnt start

The security light is staying on because 1 of 2 things, both of which relate to the vehicles VATS (vehicle ani-theft system). You know that little black bump in your key? Well thats part of the VATS system. There is a connection in the ignition that reads the resistance of the pellet. If its not the right one, the security light disables the ignition and starter for 3-5 mins. Now either the wiring is loose on the inside of the ignition switch, or the metal contacts of the key is dirty. Try cleaning the key off with some rubbing alcohol and try again. Or better yet, if you have a spare key that gets used less often, try that one. If that dosent work, its time for a new ignition
