Question about 2002 Jaguar Vanden Plas

Transmission Hit a pothole. Stopped to check damage. When I started again and put the car in DRIVE, the car lurched forward into 2nd gear. Can't start without lurching to second. Probably the transmission?? What does a rebuilt usually cost? Do most insurance cover this?

Hi raleigh1412,
I can't answer the question about insurance....I'm sure that it varies from country to country and the type of cover that you have....A careful read through of the policy or a phone call to your agent, should clear that up for you.....

I'd be interested to know if you found any damage to the gear box when you checked?

I think that the likely hood of serious damage to the gearbox is not too great....If there was leakage I'd give a different view, but in light of the fact that you engaged the transmission and drove after you had checked, I presume that you didn't see any leakage....I think that you would do well, to have the gear box and engine mountings inspected.....Also the gear selector mounting and lever....You may also require the switch control which governs the gear selection to be inspected and if necessary repaired....

I'd be interested to know how you get on....

Best regards Johngee10

Your problem indicates that the gear section is damaged .the charges depends as per the damage caused and can be derived only after seeing the actual condition.you can count somewhere arround 1000$ and many of the insurance companies cover this damages .check out with yours.

for any more queries feel free to ask.

thanks.

The best thing to do is have the car put on a lift, you may have damaged the gear selector switch, but before racing ahead to overhaul have it checked for external damage, trans overhauls are very expensive, here (USA) $2000-3000, not cheap.

2007 Chevy Avalanche 3rd and 4th gear are not working

From what you are describing, it is possible either the 3-4 actuator is no longer playing with the 3rd & 4th clutch packs, only way to know for certain is to hook up the good ol' pressure gauge to trans. system, yeah, you think the Chevrolet dealer should know this right?

Sell it now if you can!

Sounds as if forward driving gears are shot. Different gears make vehicle move in reverse. I would ask if transmission fluid level when checked is in the operation range or full.

My transmission works in winter drive but not on its own

Have you had the transmission control module scanned for fault codes? This transmission is electronically controlled. If no codes show up in memory then you may have a mechanical problem, Also winter selection starts in 2nd gear, so you may be missing that gear.

Was pushing snow and heard aloud ping while in reverse and it quit pulling.all forward gears still work. sounded like a u-joint. believe me i no that sound.i drive it like i stoled it. lol.but thats what...

not sure if this is an automatic or manual transmission 1st (automatic)if all forward gears are still working what it sounds like is that the reverse drum in the transmission has come apart. which will eventually cause the forward gears to start to go if thats the case, the rapir for the reverse drum is internal the transmission will need to be rebuilt. you can just put a reverse drum, but my opinion is there will be more damage and while its out might as well rebuild the entire transmission. you didnt mention if it was 4 wd or not and only rarely have i seen a transfer case cause the same issue, once most recently in a f150 with a manual transmission i was working on the chain stretched so bad it lost reverse but had all forward gears. 2nd (manual) could have lost the reverse synchronizer whic again the trans will need to be repaired either with just a syncro or complete rebuild. hope this helps

The transmission solenoids are not working properly. Probably requires a transmission rebuild.
I don't think it's in the ground strap or wiring.
It's an internal problem with the transmission.

Only reverse works. No foward gears.

No forward movement in OD or D, but L2, L1 and R work: Forward sprag is broken. R&R. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.

Do you have manual 1st? If so, can you shift through the gears...i.e. manual 1st to manual 2nd then 'D' then 'OD'??? Only 1st and 2nd gears use the forward sprag unless the LO/Rev clutch is engaged...i.e. 1st and 2nd if in "drive". If you can shift threw the gears manually then, yes, your forward sprag broke.

If no manual 1st then your sprag is not what broke. Sounds like you blew up the rear planet. If you pull the pan and find chunks of iron and steel, then that is probably what happened. If you have reverse then it is not the pump. If the pump was bad you would have no line pressure and it would slip in rev. or no rev. Not the beef sun shell either because you have rev., a broken sun shell would cause no 2nd, 4th and rev. gears. Either way the trans needs to come out and torn down and it will be easily found what went. Good luck and thank you for using Fixya.

It sounds like you may have lost your water pump or your thermostate may have gone bad too. Regardless if your going to change your water pump your going to have to change the thermosate too.
As for the transmission it could be your spider gears , there weak in the 700R4 and other you lose your reverse first with had lurchs when put in to drive. Sorry for the bad news, good luck

Try servicing the tranny fluid if not changing the fluid, if the problem has existed too long it may be time for a new tranny.
