If the light is on, its never going to start. the alternator has nothing to do with it. I suspect the ignition lock cylinder is bad and you will need a replacement. the key has a resistor pellet and the wires that come out of the lock cylinder, break, very common. I'm not saying that what your problem IS, but that's the most common. A locksmith may be the cheapest fix, IF thats what is wrong.

The battery kept dying. Buying a new one did not work. Now it will not start after being charged then turned off. Could it be the alternater? Another question, can I put one in my self?

Yes, sounds like alternater. Most cars run off battery and the alternater replaces the voltage your using. If alternater is not putting out the car will kill battery very quickly. If you have some basic tools you can change this out yourself. If you have a digital voltmeter to verify the alt is putting out you can charge battery read battery cold, start car and read battery voltage with car running should be between 13.2 to 14.5 volts DC.If battery is reading 12 volts and dropping rapidly, your alt is shot.

My battery light is flickering on my 1998 ford Taurus. The alternator is only two years old but the battery is close to six or seven years old. But, it still starts up in negative degree temperatures. The...

Probably the alternator again. If you have a voltmeter or there is one in the car, check battery voltage with car running. It should be at least 14 volts. Not 14 volts or no voltmeter--take alternator off and have tested at parts chain. Let me know if you need instructions or have more questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

Security light on car wont start

Yea the car is in lock down mode. Something triggered the security system, and as a result, the computer engaged the ignition kill. Disconnecting the battery alone wont solve the problem. What I would suggest is call a local Chevy dealer and ask to talk to a technician, they know the procedure and can walk you throuogh it right over the phone.

1989 Chevy Camaro Security system

Just take every cord connected to the positive side of the battery off for 10 seconds to allow the alarm to reset, then flip the little switch under the dash so the alarm won't activate again.

Chevy Malibu Check Battery Light

the problem with my malibu was the plug going to the alternator. i went to the junk yard and cut a plug end off the wiring harness and replaced it on mine and it's been working fine. i don't know why it drains the battery with the broken wire in the plug, but it did. i found the problem by wiggleing the wire while my wife watched the dash for the battery light to go out. ken!
