Question about 2004 Toyota Camry

2004 Camry ignition gets stuck on "on"

I have a 2004 Camry LE automatic. 53K miles. When I stop and put it in park, sometimes I can't turn the key all the way off. I have to put it into reverse, back up a little, then put it into park again. The key turns off and everything is fine. This happened in the spring, not the summer, now it's happening again, possibly with the cooler weather? The dealer is willing to replace either the ignition or the part of the transmission - shifter - for free. But if it turns out to be the opposite part, he won't replace that too. And he's not sure which it is. Has anyone had this problem - or do you have any idea which is the problem?

Thanks, Ed, I did try this. I took it to a second Toyota dealer and they thought it was the shifter, but they weren't sure. I do appreciate your input.

To be quite frank, a little further diagnosis on the part of the dealer will rectify this condition, but,
try this:
When the key will not come out, try pushing the shifter forwards towards the park position. If the key comes out then, it just may be an adjustment at the shifter cable.

What should we do?

Hi there,
There is a (silly) safety lock on the ignition to stop it starting in gear, or the key being removed if not in park, and a sensible safety lock on the gear shift to stop kids letting it roll down a hill. Try putting your foot firmly on the brake, press the park release button beside the gear shift, while pulling the shifter out of park and back into park.
Getting the key out: Sometimes the steering wheel is placing pressure on the steering lock and key release mechanism, so try turning the steering wheel in any direction it can go while trying to release the key. It should come only out when you are in park.

Hello.
This, unfortunately, is a very common problem. Here are a few things you can try if you haven't already;

Grab the steering column, and agressively yank it back and forth with your left hand while pulling on the key with your right hand.

Sometimes you can wiggle the gear shift, ( with an automatic transmission ), to make sure the transmission is locked into the Park position.

This is usually the result of an ignition that is warn, and may need to be replaced in the near future.

FYI, local locksmiths can usually repair/replace ignitions for a fraction of the cost of having a dealership do it.

I hope this helps you!
Donnie

Is the key stuck because you have an automatic transmission and you are unable to shift it into P (park)?

I had the key stuck once. Make sure the key is in the off position. Make sure the steering wheel is not locked against a stop. The vehicle must be in park and try stepping on the brake. Try jumping the car with another car or battery pack.

you might need to replace ignition key cylinder assy and replace current key, now, sometimes if this is a automatic transmission it might have problem with shifter interlock cable try moving shifter from park to first and back to park and try removing key again, but if key gets stuck and car won't start, does the key turns? does the engine cranks? are you using the correct key?
