2002 Nissan Frontier Overheating while Stopped Problem,

I have a 2002 Nissan Frontier Kind Cab and I am having Problems with Temperature Needle Maxing out and Overheating. This happened Around the Same Time Last year, around September/October and It was still covered under warranty and the dealer fixed the problem and told me it was the Head Gasket. I thought that was weird as It didnt smoke or leak coolant externally or run any different at all, or show any signs of that being the problem so since it was under warranty I just had them fix the problem and it was fine from then all last summer with 90+ temps, in town driving with a/c and towing in town with a/c going on max. It just stared again and only overheats when i leave the vehicle running usually longer that 3-4 minutes without moving or sitting at really long stop lights. Immediately when the vehicle stars to roll after i notice that the engine gets really hot the engine cools down as the airflow increases. It wont overheat at all when I drive but only when it sits while running for extended periods of time. Since it overheated last time when i went to start it up there was alot of engine noises. What do I DO?

    Yeah I only run with the a/c and have since the beginning of summer. Im sure when it was at the dealer they would have checked the fan relays. It was in there last year for the same exact thing and its been good all summer long even climbing grades and towing my boat.

    I have the same problem! Coolant reservoir level remains steady, engine overheats when idling. Sounds like a bad thermostat under the hood. A coworker and myself deduced this because although the fan runs fine, the heater blows cold when idling, therefore the heat isn't being dissipated properly. I'm going to replace it the thermostat with a new Nissan thermo. I hypothesize this will solve overheating problem and will be relatively cheap, but the thermo is in a tight spot toward the underside of the engine so it's going to be a knuckle-scraper.

Sounds like the radiator fan is not working. Or if it is and it uses some sort of clutch, then the fan air is not sufficient to cool the radiator. To verify, pls jump/hardwire the radiator fan temporarily to be always on with the engine running. this would mean providing a direct connection to the IGN B+12 and the other to the ground. Try, if it still overheats, then problem is elsewhere; if overheating stops, then it cold be;

  • radiator fan relay;
  • fan clutch;
  • connection from A/C to fan relay. In some instances, the radiator fan will only work if the A/C is on.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

I once had a very similar problem. The shop checked the fan clutch and several other coolant related parts. I ended up with it at a car a/c specialist who deducted that it was a bad radiator. Some of the coils in it were broken causing a reduced flow, but not stopping the flow.

Temperature gauge in nissan frontier goes from medium to low randomly, also off and on roaring sound coming from what seems to be the fan while running.

This is an indication of air or gas bubbles in the cooling system, it can be that the system is low on coolant due to a leak (have a cooling system pressure test performed) or that you have a leaking engine cylinder head gasket. I would also replace the thermostat just to rule it out as a cause, it could be sticking and causing the rapid swings in engine temperature.

I have A nissan frontier 2002 with overheatin problem I chance the heater core the radiator cap I check the radiator and the overheat problem continue

Check the water pump for leaks by its weep hole. Also remove its drive belt and see if its pulley is loose. if so replace the pump

The other items are the cooling fan, fan relay(if applicable) some models use a clutch, check clutch see if its engaging at proper temperature.

If you determine it to be the water pump might as well do timing belt/ chain and corresponding engine seals and oil pump at the same time. May cost a lot now but got about 60k before some of theses items become an issue again.

Frontier wants to run hotbut I can turn heat on in

Sounds like your engine cooling fans are not coming on properly.

This can be a bad fan motor, a bad temperature switch, or a bad relay or blown fuse.

NIssan Frontier 2002 car problems

You will probably need a new set of dash clock's. This is a very common problem with Nissan 4X4's. Contact your nissan dealer as Nissan replaced faulty one's because it was so common.
