Question about 1996 Volvo 850
Check all the vacuum pipes and rubber elbows around the throttle body as they will be deteriorating by now if not replaced already. Also clean the throttle body and idle air control valve by using throttle body cleaner. Check the fuel pump filter, relay and pump too as they are known to cause this problem. It will also need HT leads at this age.

You should get the codes read that tells you what is wrong i had this sort of problem turned out to be the camshaft sonsor
