I drive a 1997 Toyota Tercel with a manual transmission. Lately the clutch as felt a bit loose and I've had some trouble changing gears, almost as if me pushing on the clutch is registuring. I was wondering what could be the cause of this and if it is something that I can fix myself. I don't have much in the way tool though.

You likely need a new clutch, perhaps a new pressure plate and perhaps more. . .

SOURCE: 1997 Toyota Tercel (Manual)

Fuel regulator, EGR vavle and EGR valve sensor. But this really sounds like a fuel issue. You can also check your fuel pump, and of course check your air filter and your spark plugs.

SOURCE: Where is the transmission fill on the manual

Check both sides of the gearbox for a plug (screw) simular to the drain plug on the bottom. This is a level screw remove it then on the bottle of trans. oil their should be a lid with a pipe on it put the pipe in the hole and squeze the bottle until the oil comes out of the hole in the gearbox.

MY 92 TOYOTA TERCEL DOES NOT SHIFT WHEEN STARTED

Dear Crystal,
I think your Tercel has a manual transmission, also called a standard transmission.
If so, raise the hood of the car and look for the "clutch master cylinder".
To see what that looks like, go the the "e-bay" web-site and type in "1992 Tercel clutch master cylinder".
Check the fluid level. (It takes brake fluid if it is empty.)
If it is empty, you have probably the need to change the "slave cylinder" on the transmission bell housing.
God bless your efforts.

Can't keep the car running

Make sure that the negative and positive leads to your battery are not switched. If that doesn't work you might need a new computer.

1997 ford probe manual transmission problem. I was driving in 4th gear when all of a sudden the car felt like gears where griding. It didn't have the really lound noise as if you didn't put it fully in...

well we could just lie and tell you what you want to hear but that wont help you... did you smell anything when this happend, if you lost a spring in the clutch plate this is what could happen.. but im speculating at the moment with out seperating the engine and trani..
that is where i would start, dont put the trani in the grave befor you see if it has a heartbeat, check things out a little more before panicing.
try putting the clutch in and putting in gear as you strat the car see if it will go in gear, my gut says you may have a clutch problem but you need to test a bit more before i can say for sure...
good luck please post comments if you have more info for me to chew on.

1989 Toyota Tercel 5 speed stick trouble starting

sounds like your clutch safety switch, the switch that keeps the vehicle from starting unless clutch pedal is depressed, is not working.. the correct thing to do would be to buy a new one.. on the other hand cutting the wires and wiring them together will work just fine.. but keep in mind the vehicle will then start in gear with out pushing in the clutch pedal so use extra precaution when starting if you decide to take this route.. hope i could help

Tercel 1997

I had the same problem, check if there's any oil in the spark plugs, or maybe one of the wires is loose or the plug is bad.
