Question about 2003 Dodge Durango

1 Answer

Bad transmission at 50,000 miles

I am mad as hell. All of a sudden, my truck starts off in 3rd gear instead of 1rst gear. Engine light goes on at the same time.
I bring it to Aamco and they said the control box was no good and a clip that was supposed to be around the clutch was broken in half lying in the trans pan. I am gonna get an attorney and see it Dodge will reimburse me at least part of the cost of me getting a new transmission ($2250 cost). I demanded a 2 yr. warranty which they gave me. What a piece of junk. A new transmission at only 50,000 miles. Gimmie a break.

Doesnt supprise me that is one of dodge weak points,
do you have your warranty in writing and are you within the limits?
a 2003 would be out of factory warranty and dodge has nothing to do with it. it would be the dealer that gave you the warranty.
good luck
let us know how you do
later paul

Try this have your transmission fluid and filter changed if you have not had it done in over 50,000 miles. Whining is a indicator that the fluid is getting dirty.

have the trans checked out, sounds like it might be in 2 gears when your shifting into 2nd, causing it to bind up, is there any noise when this problem occurs? a bad bearing or worn syncro rings could be the cause

While merging onto the highway when my car hit 3 and 4th gear the engine seemed to "stutter/misfire" during harder acceleration. Check engine light also flashed briefly during hard acceleration. Dur

Could be a transmission problem or something as simple as bad spark plugs.
The engine is under the most load when RPM is low and you are trying to accelerate, such as when it upshifts.
You should have the computer checked for trouble codes and hopefully that will point you in the right direction to test.
If the spark plugs have more than 50,000 miles of wear you might start with replacing them.

My 1999 clk 320 suddenly will not shift out of 3rd gear, its been going good for 184000 miles and all service has been done by a mercedes mechanic

sounds like the transmission is in limp home mode where it won't shift out of second gear. this is a fail safe mode. If the check engine light is on too then its probably not seeing one of the speed sensors in the transmission. Just need to have the codes pulled in the transmission control module.

So what exactully is wrong with my transmission on a 2001 gmc jimmy that it's having problems firing into 3rd and 4th gear?

Assuming that the transmission fluid and filter were changed every 50,000 miles as required by GM, then the transmission valve body has a few ports that are beginning to wear excessively, a few valves that are worn, and likely the forward accumulator piston is excessively worn around the pin, and the plastic accumulator piston is likely cracked. The 1-2 and 3-4 clutch packs have probably lost a good deal of their friction material, and the thin factory steels are probably warped. The sun gear reaction shell is probably fatigued and could be cracked aroun the input gear collar.
In other words, if you know for a fact that the fluid and filter have been changed every 50,000 miles, this transmission is begging for a rebuild. If you don't have it done before it leaves you walking, you will have it done after it does.
If you don't know about the service interval on the transmission, try changing the fluid and filter. It may help.
If it doesn't, and it probably won't at this age, tell the guy at the transmission shop that (print this out): you want a Beast (brand name) sun shell, Alto Red Eagle clutch packs with full-thickness Kolene steels, pinless aluminum accumulator piston, new reverse drum, Carbon Fiber power band, Sonnax (brand name) "Super Hold" 1-2 and 3-4 servos, and Sonnax master rebuild kit overhaul package INSTEAD of a straight stock rebuild. It will cost a few hundred more, but it will be bullet-proof, shift firm and crisp, and it will feel like you added about 50 horsepower to the engine without touching it.
Let me know how it works out, and if I helped you, remember to vote/comment.
Good luck...

Shifting problem, automatic transmission

Does your check engine light come on when this happens? It's probably when your tranny goes into limp home mode. You should have 1st gear ( only if you shift it there manually) 3rd and reverse. You are probably experiencing the 3rd gear thing and are probably burning up all of the clutches when you accelerate and should probably take it into the shop before something worse happens. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
