Question about 2000 Subaru Outback
My wife was driving the car and stopped to shop. She parked and turned the car off and everything seemed normal. When she returned from shopping, the car would not start. When the key is turned, nothing happens - no clicks or groaning like the car is attempting to start. The radio works; the lights come on; but the doors do not lock by the remote.
Three things that i can think of that will cause that. One the wire from the starter solenoid is off. On my windstar that often came off... just a spade type push on clip. second is the starter may have failed.... third and actually least likely is that the motor is seized. there is one other item to check... the fuse for the starter. that is likely located in a fuse panel in the engine compartment near the battery. if the wire is off.... UNHOOK the battery before you attempt to hook it back on. It's usually obvious if it is off as you will see a stray wire hanging down from the starter location.
Actually i did note something you said that i nearly missed.... if that car has an engine immobilizer on it (part of the alarm system) confirm the alarm is off.
