Question about 2000 Volvo S40

2000 volvo s40 overheated

I was on the freeway doing 75 mph, when all of a sudden the engine overheated instantly. I pulled over the side of the road. Called a tow truck. The next day at the repair shop, the mechanic said the engine would not turn over, so I need to replace the engine????? The quote: used engine plus labor, $3900.00. Could it just be my head, and not the complete engine. Total miles on car is 115,000. Thank-you for your reply. Jeff

ok.. by not turn over i'm hoping looked at it first... there's a chance your serpentine belt snapped which would stop all your engine's accessories from working (power steering , a/c, ALTERNATOR...) if your belt snapped,, then it would make your water pump stop spinning... causing the over heat and also drain power out of your battery. (when the alternator stops working the car runs off whatever juice the battery has.. when that dies NOTHING works... thus the no turn over in AM at mechanic shop...

No lights came on when it overheated.
The thermostat went to the red immediately!!!!! I pulled over to the side of the road. In the morning the mechanic tried turning the engine over, did not turn over. He says it needs a engine. He wants to put in a used engine with 70,000 miles and charge me $3900.00. I am skeptical. Can it just be the head and it needs fixing???? Thank-you for your response.

VOLVO S40 SE 2001RPM HIGH

YOU MAY HAVE A IDLE SPEED CONTROL VALVE PROBLEM, CLEAN IT FIRST, THEN DISCONNECT THE BATTERY, FOLLOW THE PROCEDURE I HAVE ATTACHED.

Here is the most common cause of this stall and idle speed issues, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
