Our trusted local oil change guy said that we should have our transmission checked because the oil looks "bad". This worries me to no end and I am wondering if anyone can give me clues as to what to possibly expect. If the oil in the transmission looks bad, I assume it could be anything from things breaking down in the transmission to the oil being bad from over use (probable). The only thing my wife has noticed is that there seems to be a change in how the truck takes off from a dead stop. It was just going from reverse into drive that it would seem to stall then catch and go. Now it seems to be slipping a little taking off from red lights.
Does anyone have a clue about how much a worst case GM rebuilt transmission costs to be replaced (parts/labor)? Does anyone care to take a stab at how long it has before it gets dangerous?

Re: Transmission Fluid Looks "Bad"?
You just need the fluid change im sure its probably dark and every oil changer makes it sound bad!! just get it serviced new fluid and tranny filter if equipped although if theres tons of miles on the fluid dont change it because theres a possibility that it wont ever shift again and thats around 125K
a 6ya Mechanic can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

what year model type cadillac.could be many things depend on cadillac model, transmission fluid level could be low, check transmission fluid color on dip stick looks dark brown smell burned, replace transmission fluid and filter, transmission fluid could be old dirty, that will cause shift problems, if you have newer type cadillac have vechicle code scan because you have line pressure solenoid, shift solenoids and BAD TPS SENSOR CAUSE SHIFTING PROBLEMS AND FAULTY VSS SENSOR.take vechicle to transmission shop let them use diagnostic euipment see if they come up with a code, they can also check transmission pump oil pump pressure, if pump leak transmission wont shift right or not at all.
SOUND PROBLEM IN TRANSMISSION OIL PUMP OR TRANSMISSION TORQUE CONVERTER.SINCE YOU NEED BOTH OF THEM EITHER ONE MALFUNCTION THERE WILL BE NO LOW DRIVE GEAR OR OVER DRIVE.MAKE SURE TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL NOT LOW. IF ALL LOOKS GOOD. YOU CAN CHANGE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND CHANGE FILTER FIRST TO SEE IF HELPS ANY. IF NOT TAKE TRANSMISSION TO SHOP.THEY NEED TO RUN OIL PUMP PRESSURE TEST TO SEE IF OIL PUMP BAD.
check transmission fluid first.if its low add to get correct level.if transmission fluid look dark smells burnt replace fluid and filter.if car still dont move forward.looks like you have bad worn out forward clutch plates and seals.also bad transmission oil pump.you need a overhaul or new transmission.
make sure check transmission for proper fluid level and color.if fluid looks black or smell burnt.change fluid and filter.check manual linkage for proper adjustment.if all is good.your transmission oil pump bad or the over drive unit has damage roller clutch.or the forward clutch has burned clutch plates and damage pistons and seals.you probably need to buy another transmission or get an overhaul.
Check the transmission fluid level, per your owners manual. (Some transmission fluid levels need to be checked cold, some hot with the engine running and some hot with the engine off) Most hot with engine running.
If your level is good, and the fluid looks reddish or maroon, bring it to a trusted local mechanic. He/she will be able to determine if you have a blown transmission or if bad solenoid(s) are to blame for your poor shifting. Transmission solenoids cannot be checked by the average person in their driveway.
Dark brown or black transmission fluid means the transmission was not serviced properly and the fluid "cooked" and a fatal internal failure has occured, or vice versa.
SOUND LIKE TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING.CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID MAKE SURE ITS NOT LOW.ALSO IF TRANSMISSION FLUID LOOKS DIRTY DARK AND SMELLS BAD REPLACE FLUID AND FILTER.IF FLUID IS GOOD YOU HAVE.TRANSMISSION OIL PUMP AND FORWARD CLUTCH PROBLEMS.
Yes it's a bad seal and most likely the side bearing to the trans axle is bad too. Once the bearing has play, it vibrates and causes the oil to leak though the seal.
Note: if one side went bad the other side is soon to follow since they have the same amount of miles on them. Might as well change both side.
Good luck and hope this helps. Keep an eye on the transmission fluid level, don't want to burn out the transmission.
