Hi i believe u can lose the belt out, if yes then is just as simple as abc,
1.After removing the timing belt, check if the oil seal by the sprocket and that of fully are ok, be replaced
2.look at the outer side of the belt so get the size and number,or if u didn't get the number just count the teeth of the timing belt and know either 172,184,195 or which ever the one removed counts
3.lose the number one plug bring out the deep stick for guaging the engine oil, gently put it into the hole of the plug, then get your apparantice to turn the engine by the fully through the use of a sppaner until the piston number one raise to the top position.
4.then gently also turn the camshaft by the sprocket gently to rich the mark arrow on the sprocket and the top cylinder to be on the same position on exousevalve open for chamber one where the piston one has raise up to the top.
5. start fixing the belt gently from the buttom fully and gently to the top sprocketwithout distorting the the set fully and the sprocket of the camshaft,
6. less i forget iniyially the adjust of the belt is being lose earlier, now return the adjuster gently, to a suatable level and tie it gently.
7. Here we normally test the car for a start just briefly if the setting is ok,as soon as the engine respond then we quickly off it and return all the covers. and is ferfect all the time we do it

Will my 2004 volvo xc90 have a message indicator when timing belt is bad?

I seriously doubt the code was for the belt. It could have been for something the belt drives. If you can find out what the code was we can advise.
And no the computer will not set a code for the timing belt. Most companies recommend replacing the timing belt at 60,000 to 80,000 miles.
