Question about 1998 Ford Escort

No power, altenator harness plug?

All power was lost in vehicle, vehicle died. the spedometer, lights, engine all quit. I am guessing that it might be the altenator harness plug. Would this cause the problem?

There is a power distribution box under the hood,(near battery) in it are large maxi,they power up the electrical system, sounds like 1 or more are blown, did yopu jump the battery backwards?

Dash lights come on..mph gauge went down..radio cut out..loss of power in engine..kills batterie. While running, removed pos. batt. cable and engine died. Altenator problem??


You need to replace the Alternator. The vehicle died because you removed the power supply to all the accessories, if you remove the Negative cable and it dies then you know for sure it is the alternator. that is an old shade tree way to test the alternator.

The truck dies when you turn the head lights or the wipers on


Replace the altenator. It has gone bad and every thing is running on the battery.

Will not turn over, battery is less than one year


it could be a faulty cell in the battery, get it tested, if its less than 1 year old it should be under warranty, take it back and get it replaced, even good batteries go bad! mind you it could be just a bad earth or starter playing up check it out

Battery died (or not). When I give it a jump, the car starts, but as soon I remove the jump cable, car turns off.. What could be the issue>


Your issue is indicating two problems. First let's talk about how your charge system works so that you can see what happened. The battery is there to start the engine. At the point the engine starts, the alternator takes over and provides power to the engine and also charges the battery for the next time you start your car. If the alternator fails to work, the engine runs solely off the battery. The car should have indicated that the charge system is not working, maybe you saw a battery light on your dashboard. After some time, the battery is depleted and will not start the car or be able to run the engine. So it appears that you have a defective alternator, and also your battery is either discharged, or is also bad. When you hook up your car to jumper cables, you are running off of your buddy's charge system/battery, so when you disconnect them, your car dies.

Could be a bad ECU. We are having a similar issue and the dash spedometer dies and them comes back on with the check engine lights and TEMP light then they seem fine. HTH.

you replaced it with one from the junkyard. Who's to say the car in the junkyard didn't have the same issue before it died? Anyway, the check engine light and low idle may be attributed to the fact that the ECM lost all power to it, and when the vehicle is running and ECM loses power, it will throw a check engine light. Also now the ECM will need to relearn it's idle and various other parameters that take a lil time. (15 miles or so) I would have the check engine light checked to see which code you have. Also make sure the air suspension is not leaking. That is the number 1 killer of alternators on mark viii's.

My harness for my trailer lights quit working.


If the lights are working on your vehicle, then no. With a test light, check to see if you're getting power on the plug coming from the vehicle. You should if all the lights are working on your truck. I'd check the ground wire to the plug on the trailer harness... probably loose or disconnected, especially if everything quit all of a sudden.

I would start with the altenator. The repair is very easy.

Rick after you replace the altenator and the system does not get any better. The system has a draw or short . The vehicle has a body control module . This could be the cause or the power distribution box in the engine were all the relays are is starting to go out. I would take the vehicle in to you local mechanic to check it out if the altenator replacement does not work.
