Question about 1992 Pontiac Firebird

Sometimes when my son attempts to start his car it will not start, he waits a few minutes then tries again and it starts. We have been told it is the chip in the key causing the problem. Is that possible

I took the key to the dealership, they tested it and advised me there was no problem with the key, we have now replaced the coil, and the electronic ignition module as well as the raidiator which had a leak but still having problem. Car will start, travel to destination, return home, attempt to run errand, attempt to start, cranks then shuts off after waiting awhile will typically start again????? I am clueless and very upset as I fear my son will be stranded somewhere.

Hi, i have a 1992 Firebird with the V6 Engine. I have the same starting problems with it almost exactly. Sometimes it will start just fine & other times, it won't start & so i go around checking that the battery cables are secure, tightening them ect...I once even got a jump & it would not start, the guy got fed up & gave up...I got back in a few minutes later & tried the key one more time since I was stranded anyway..and wallah! It suddenly started like magic.

My problems first started when a stalker who vandalizes it intermittenly, tried to steal it, he was so mad about the anti-theft ignition shut down sytem, that he tore out the whole steering column (& you name it) trying to get it "hot-wired" to no avail. He then kicked it & stabbed the tire, ect..well, beat it up etc...
It cost me a few thousand dollars to fix it all, but after that I had to keep replacing the ignition switch..i've replaced the starter (which I did not really need afterall) & then ERG Valve..which I did need by then, because my stalker had a pretend mechanic hit it with a hammer, pretending that would fix it! etc.So after replacing that..getting new battery again etc.. It worked For awhile & I thought YAY! It is finallystarting right again.
But now it is starting to do it again!
Sometimes it starts & sometimes it does not, just like the Lady said happens to her son. Sometimes I wait a few minutes and it will start again.!..It has been very erratic..
I LOVE my Firebird & it has been thru alot from my stalker and kept surviving. The stalker hit me on the head at the beach & stole my whole purse to also get my computer chip key & I had to have a Locksmith come remake it from that unique 'little model key thing' that the car dealer gave me when iI first bought it, but I never thought about the computer chip key might need to be replaced yet again because that might be part of the erratic starting problem!?
Thanks for the tip. I don't want to keep being stranded either, I've tried everything, after that problem started which was coincidently or not, just after the first violent theft attempt on my car.
If I had not had the anti-theft system tho, the stalker would have got my car way back then anyway tho.
Sorry so long..If anybody figures out more about this problem, please let us all know. THANX! :o)

Their is alot of possibilities of what could be wrong from the fuel filter getting plugged to you PATS system not reading your key . i would try another key. also try to turn the key on for 30 sec turn off and then on for 30 sec and thenturn over the engine.

when it doesnt start we need to find out if it has spark and fuel pressure?

a fuel injector with a high restance can cause your comp. to shut down.

lets not throw parts at the problem. we need to get vital information and test components to make sure they need replaced.

    on the pats system

i have seen very few keys problems but i have seen problems with the sensor in the key switch.

when the car disables the car with pats the security light should flash when it disabling the ign system.

Do you get a "check engine" light? If so, have the code read. Sometimes you won't get the error the first time.
I had a similar problem with a different car, was the cam position sensor. After the 4th or 5th time, I did get a code and that told me exactly what to replace.

Why does our 2002 subaru outback sometimes refuse to start and other times starts right up?

Get a $10 MAF CRC cleaner to clean MAF sensor and throttle body, start here first since it's cheap.

Ignition switch doesn't engage starter. For several months every 10-15 times that I attempted to start it it would click once and not start. If I waited a few minutes before trying it again, it would...

Does your ignition key have a small 'chip" in it, sometimes call a smart key? If it does, that may be the source of the problem. The "chip" is actually a small resistor that has to be read by the sensor in the ignition switch. Try cleaning the key with alcohol and see if there is any difference. Sometimes they get dirty and the sensor has a hard time reading them.

I had a similar problem on an 02 Silverado. Replacing the fuel pressure regulator fixed the problem.
