Question about 2007 Kia Sedona LX Minivan

1 Answer

2005 Kia Sedona

My Sedona has 73K on it and the Temp gauge was always just under the half mark when operating. Just recently it goes up to the 3/4 mark when sitting at idle and goes down to normal when driving. There is no fluid loss but there is a smell of antifreeze but only sometimes, There is no evidence of spillage or spray anywhere that I can see on the floor or around the engine.
My first question is what could this be? and Second question , would this problem be covered under the 10 year 100K warranty?

Have the coolant lines checked that go to your rear air conditioning. Located near the exhast pipes. We had a similar issue and found that there is a small area that is not protected by weather, road, etc. and corrodes. This is a known issue by KIA but they will not cover it under any of their warranties. We had a KIA dealer tell us our engine was blown because he noticed antifreeze coming from the exhast pipe while up on the rack. Tried to tell us we would need to replace entire engine until they realized it was antifreeze dripping from coolant lines and dropping onto exhast pipe. I believe that since we had this repaired, there was tech report for KIA repair shops regarding this problem. Cost of repair - $700.00. This is only one of several issues I have had with this van - will never buy or recommend anyone to buy KIA. KIA does not stand behind their so called "warranty".

Check the thermostat for debris since you could have knocked something loose during the water pump swap. I would probably buy a new thermostat because they are cheap/easy to swap and you could always return it. A timing belt is a pretty extensive undertaking especially in a front wheel drive in which the engine may need to be un-mounted on that side, and likely many other things disconnected and reconnected throughout the process. Did you swap the timing belt, or take it to a shop. It may still be covered under some type if limited warranty if you could prove this to be the cause.

I just had the thermostat, a hose and water pump replaced in my 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. The temperature gauge always stayed at half or under. It now is between half and 3/4 more towards 3/4. This...

This is not normal. Several possible causes are;
the wrong thermostat was put in, meaning the temperature setting is higher than the one that it replaced;
the fans are not working properly
if the cooling system was not flushed, you may have a blockage
if the radiator was not rodded out, it may have a blockage
the system may not have been completely filled with coolant
the cooling system may have been filled with less than a 50/50 blend of coolant and water ( I once left a shop that filled my car with water only and it boiled)
Since I don't know what your symptoms were before you had the work done, it is possible that you had one of these other problems and didn't know it.
Try the cheap fixes first:
Look at the overflow tank and see if it the coolant level is at the (cold) full mark if the car has been sitting overnight or at the (hot) full mark if the car was just driven. If it is not at the full mark add coolant and water in a50/50 mix until you have the tank at the full mark. IF it was mixed properly, the coolant should have color to it: gatorade green, or orange are typical, and it should feel slippery
when you rub it between your fingers

after that, run the car and check to see if the fans come on. they should come on after the car gets to the normal operating heat temp as shown on the gauge.

does the temp gauge show the car getting steadily hotter and then dropping down to 3/4? If that's the case then the problem is likely to be with the thermostat - it may be sticking and back to the shop it goes.

That is a good temperature reading. If it ever gets up pas the three quarter mark, then you have a problem. Although most vehicles read at the half-way point on the temp. gauge. Hope this helps, James Booth PLEASE RATE THIS!!! :)
