Question about 1988 Volvo 760

Open Question

760 accleration issues

I have a 86 volvo 760 turbo with over 183,000 miles, and recently it has trouble acclerating on hills, and some uneven surfaces when it the car will almost drag itself to the top of the hill and then suddenly shift into gear downhill. When l tried to acclerate, black smoke was coming out of the exhaust. On the interstate the car would not go any faster than 50 mph, the engine would stall if pushed. Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

SOURCE: missing

i wouldgo to the garage and get them to look at it.
It sounds like its near the end of its life and 1 of your cylinders may have broken.
Does it make a different sound?
You may just need a new cooler or most likely a new battery.

It may be your fuel regulator, mine did the same thing, and the turbo should go almost down to no power while going down hill, thats normal

Having accleration issues mostly going up hills. Just replaced fuel filter.

The knock sensor is famous for causing all sorts of trouble If you have a code for it, it probably needs to be replaced.

It could be a faulty sensor, valve or blockage in the EGR (tube) from a carbon buildup.

in some cases it may be a problem with the ecu

Its a 04 a4 tdi avant with 290k klm full service history from new im the 3rd owner, the turbo is whistling on accleration, is this good or bad?

This is a bad issue. From now you should think about turbocharger reparation or replacement with a new one. It's a normal turbo wear after 290k km. Pay attention at exhaust gases colour and at engine oil level! Good luck!

86 760 gle 2.8 v6 133000 . what are some known problems if any with this engine ? is it worth rebuilding ?

the engine is the weakest is made by peugeot/citreon for volvo and is too expensive to rebuild.instead get hold of a 2.3 turbo and fit is a simple job as all the bits are readily available from volvo/scrap yards(you will need the engine bell housing and gearbox, plus the propshaft.)

trun the key with your foot off the acclerator. but that should have no bearing on starter failure . why have you replaced the starter have you checked the connection to make sure they are tight . when you have replaced the starter have you checked the ring gear for wear. and is the starter installed correctlykdc744
