Question about 2004 Volkswagen Passat
A motor is used to release the latch. A spring is used to retract the spindle that the motor drives to release the latch. The spring becomes too weak to pull the spindle back and thus keeps the latch from latching. This was on a 2006 Jetta. I had to remove the latch mechanism and disassemble the latch itself to get to the spring. I separated the spring and re-assembled it. It is working well now.

I had a similar problem with my 2006 Jetta.
Basically, on the left hand side of the trunk, there is a rubber hose that runs alongside the closing mechanism, hidden by a flimsy plastic guard.
Through basic use, this guard cracked, and part of it and the hose would get in the way of the mechanism, preventing it from locking/closing properly.
So I removed the broken guard, and used electrical tape instead to keep the hose out of the way of the closing mechanism.
Really, though, VW should do something about this. I didn't find out it was the cause of this problem until closing the trunk, having it secure but not "beep" and pushing down on parts of the trunk until I received the "beep" signifying all doors were locked.
