Does the fan belt need to have grooves on both sides? the fan belt i have has grooves on one side and is smooth on the other side. the smooth side of the belt passes over a/c compressor in which it has grooves. so, do i need a double grooved fan belt?

I believe on the 2.0 it needs to be double sided because the way its routed. you can not run the flat side of the belt against the ribs of a pulley. it will just chew it up

Start on bottom pulley , remember engine turns right .. go to next pulley up , if pulley is grooved install grooves in belt on pulley , next pulley , grooved or smooth , smooth use back of belt , remember clockwise around pulleys , grooved pulleys grooved side , smooth pulley back side ....
The grooves on the belt go with the grooves on the pulley, the belt will fold around so the smooth side of the belt runs on the smooth surface of the idlers and tensioner. If you're not sure how to route the belt, there is usually a diagram under the hood of the car or you can look it up online.
if you look at the belt you have a smooth side and a grooved side and if you look at the pullies you have a grooved side and a smooth side,hence smooth to smooth and grooved to grooved.
There may be a label with a diagram showing the routing of the belt on the fan shroud area but basically the grooved side goes against the grooved pulleys and the smooth side goes against the smooth pulleys
relieve the tension by moving the idler pulley to make the belt slack. Some have a hole in it that accepts a 1/2 in. drive ratchet and you pull it to move the pulley. Others have a bolt head you put a wrench on to move the pulley.

Hello. The tension can be adjusted. Just loosen the tensioning pulley, use a crow bar to put tension on the serpentine belt and tighten that tensioning pulley back down. Joe
You should have a diagram on one of the stickers under hood or on radiator support. But when installing it remember belt must go around each pulley and if pulley has grooves then grooves side of belt,if pulley is smooth then smooth side of belt.One of the smooth tensioners is spring loaded and usually has a slot for a pull bar to fit to relieve tension to remove and install belt.
is it a squeal noise or what? explain more in detail. and yes the belt is directional in that it's path is designed to run in one direction only, no matter which side you put on the belt itself, the belt can be installed in one way or flip it over to the opposite side...doesn't matter, only matters if you installed it correctly on the routing of the belt. And the grooved edge is to be facing down inside the main pulley's that have grooves. If you have the smooth side down into the pulley grooves, remove teh belt and turn it inside out so that the smooth side does not ride inside the grooves of the pulleys.Sometimes, the tensioner pulley will squeal or the idler pulley will squeal when they are going out. If you are actually hearing the fan come on and off, that's normal, the fan is set up to turn on and off according to engine temperature and some cars they continue to run for a bit after ignition is turned off as well to cool the engine down. check to see if the belt is set all the way on all the pulley's it rides on and not partly off on the edge, realign as needed.
