Check engine light/code 440?

I have a check engine light that comes on intermittently (seems to be warmer weather or when I use A/C). Had it finally checked. Autozone said it was code 440? Some sort of vacuum-related issue. They said to try replacing the gas cap (which I did - got one from the dealer). Light stayed on, so I had it reset. Came back on a day later. Other option was vacuum related - they said take it to a garage. Could it be a simple hose replacement? Or filter?

I didn't see any loose or disconnected lines. It does idle rough on rare occasion. It also seems to have a bit of a "fish bite" when accelerating. The car has 110k on it

I changed the MAP sensor a little while ago. The check engine light did not go off. Do I need to have it reset? It has gone off by itself in the past (only to rear its ugly head). The car seems to be idling a bit different/rougher, but it could be the cheap gas I put in it today.

You should look on the right side of the engine(closest to the firewall) for any loose or disconnected vaccum lines on your intake, throttle body or you evap system. I do have a question? does the vehicle idle rough or does it hesitate on acceleration?

that sounds like you might have a faulty mpa sernsor(manifold pressure sensor also known as barometric switch) this would explain a loss of vaccum like symptom and a intermitant idle. this would throw a vaccum code.; p-lease rate this

if your having a rough idle it could be that your TPS(throttle position sensor) is the fault. it could also be the O2 sensor as well, because the O2, TPS,map, and maf all work in conjunction they all are fuel related in that the ECM(engine control module) receives the signals from them and adjusts according to the return signal. have you found any loose are disconnected vaccum lines yet?as far as the light you should have it reset, however if there is an active code the light will come back on. to do a good diagnosis of the electronic system a full scan should be done. this involves more than just a code reader. with a scan tool at a shop you can check the ecm for any faults and reset them you can also change the paraqmeters to give the vehicle better performance.

Check code engine po171

I'd be more concerned at looking into the fact that it takes a while to cool off in order to start up again. P0171/174 codes mean a lean condition. I'd suspect that you may have a problem with Vapor lock on the one bank, which is causing air to form in the fuel rail on that side. Since air compresses, the fuel pressure doesn't necessarily come up enough to restart the engine until the fuel has cooled down enough to stop boiling. Did this start happening once the weather in your area started getting warmer?

check the condition of the key battery as it may be low in cold weather and not communicating properly with the immobiliser.. I suggest this because batteries generally fail more often in cold weather compared to warmer climates.

There are alot of areas to cover with this car. first I would do a compression test on the cylinders. if they are not up to par this is a lot of your problems. I would retire this car. if they are then do a tune up and change the fuel filter to start. also have the computer checked for codes anyway. this should get you started. let me know

Goes 5 miles and dies

Does it start right back up?if it does does it run another five miles. Does the car seem to be too hot? Is the check engine light on with the engine running? If the lights on get the codes read and follow their lead. over heating is in the five mile range as is the fuel tank not getting air in to let the fuel flow out. The exhaust can be stopped up but if it does restart after quitting it'll runn only a short time before it quits again. Driving the car harder will make it quit sooner as will warmer weather.

Camry 2002 Engine light comes on exactly at half

I'm pretty sure 440 is an evaporation malfunction code. The cheapest cause is usually the fuel cap. However, there are evap solenoids that go bad over time. I believe there are three of them at around $50.00 each. Also check the connections where they plug in as they may have become loose or corroded.

I recommend a trans fluid and filter change first. It definately sounds like the problem is in the trans. If it was any sort of engine component you would have had a check engine light on.

Intermittant engine check light comes on no problem with motor

A check eng lite will very seldom cause any drive-ability concern, you most likely have an intermittent fault like a O2 sensor, have Kragen run a self test for a trouble code, it's fun and it's free!
