Low battery warning light

I have a 1995 form club wagon with the LOW BATTERY warning light on when I start the engine and remains on. It slowly turns off when I ver the engine but come back on when in idle. Is there a way to check if my alternator is charging my battery. The battery indicator seem to indicate that the battery is not charging. The battery gage is indicating low battery level also.

YOU NEVER REMOVE A BATTERY CABLE WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
batteries when charging make hydrogen gas and when you remove the cable there will be a spark and explode the battery and send acid in you face and all over.
the best way to check is to check the voltage at the battery it should be over 13.6 volts.
another quick way that alot of mechanics do is hold a screw driver to the back side of the alt . the back side of the alt will be magnetized and the driver will stick to the alt.
thanks paul

The quickest way to check is to start the vehicle then remove the positive battery cable, if the engine dies then the regulater in the altenator is bad and you will know that it's not charging. you will also need to check that all the connections between the battery and the vehicle are tight.. please rate this thanks

Why would the oil light stay on?

That depends on the type of oil warning light being displayed. There are 2 types of warning lights

1. Low oil pressure light which all cars have
2. low oil level light which some cars have.

Low OIL PRESSURE warning means the oil pressure is below minimum and when this happens there will be insufficient lubrication of many engine parts because sufficient oil cannot get to all parts of the engine it is required to lubricate. Until the cause is identified and rectified the warning light will remain. If you run your engine with low oil pressure you will cause expensive damage to internal engine components.

Low OIL LEVEL warning means the oil in the sump has dropped to a dangerously low level (which may be due to an oil leak or abnormal oil consumption by the engine.) This warning means the oil level needs to be topped up and the warning will stay displayed until you top up the oil. Running the engine with low oil will cause expensive engine damage.
Since it is a 2 minute job, Oil levels should be checked fortnightly as a minimum, together with radiator coolant and power steering fluid levels, if you run the car most days each week as most people do.

It is possible for a warning light to remain displayed when the cause has been dealt with because there is a problem with the sender unit. However it needs to be established with alternative checks that the problem has been fixed before investigating if there is a problem with the warning light itself.

Red spanner warning light

Brake Light. Make sure you are not driving with hand brake on. Check brake-fluid level. Top off brake fluid if low and make appointment to check brakes. Driving with brake light can be dangerous; deal with this soon. Call tow truck or drive carefully and slowly to shop.
ABS (antilock brake system) Light. Indicates either low brake-fluid level, stuck brake caliper or faulty ABS. Check brake fluid and make appointment to get brakes checked. Call tow truck or drive carefully and slowly to shop.
Oil Light. Either engine is very low on oil or there is no oil pressure. Pull over and turn off engine immediately. Check oil level and add oil if low. Turn engine back on to see if light has gone off. If oil light is still on, bad oil pump (no oil pressure) is likely. Call tow truck.
Check Engine Light. Car's computer senses engine problem. Difference in performance may not be noticeable, but make appointment to have car diagnosed. This usually cost around $65-$75 to do. OK to drive. If problem is serious, computer may switch to limp-home (low-power) mode and you won't have option of waiting to bring car into shop.
Air Bag Light. Get air bags checked. Problem could prevent them from activating in accident. OK to drive, but not safe in accident.
Battery Charge Light. Alternator is not charging. OK to drive, but turn off any unneeded electrical devices (radio, heater, defroster) and avoid starting engine more than necessary. Bring car into shop soon to avoid getting stranded. When alternator is not charging, battery loses charge and car stops working.
Emissions Lights (O2 sensor, EGR, check emissions). Depending on car model, these lights may indicate problem with emissions sensor or may light up at certain mileage, usually 60,000 miles (100,000 km). Get sensors checked. OK to drive. If problem exists, car might get poor gas mileage.

Battery and brake light on

For some reason the brake warning light and battery light are connected, so either system could be having problems.
The battery warning light could mean the battery is not being charged, and the brake warning light could mean you are low on brake fluid.
I would start with the check engine light and see what the codes are.

The battery light has come on in car and the windows and central locking have stopped working

The battery warning light comes on because the output voltage of the engine alternator (dynamo) has fallen below the voltage of the battery, this turns the alternator into a ground and the light for the battery turns on in the dash. The other electrical problems are likely symptoms of the low system voltage problem caused by the low alternator output voltage.

My 97 Excort wagon died. Won't start. Power to radio ect. Won't jump start. If I put another battery and the charger on at the same time it will slowly turn over but not enough to run.Any ideas? I haven't...

Even though the radio works,it could still be a bad battery. The radi requires very little power as well as the lights but the starter requires a lot of power. How old is your battery? The average life of an alkaline battery is about 6 years. If you have an Autozone nearby, they will do a free alternator/battery check. You say it is turning over but slowly? Here's to check the starter.Locate the starter. If you're not sure where it is,call a shop or a dealer and tell them make, model, engine size, they will tell you for free to attract business.Tap on the starter with a hammer 2 or 3 times, not too hard, not too soft then try starting. It may take several tries but if it is the starter,it will start because they do not fail 100%.I have a 1995 escort wagon and the starter is in an awful spot. Good luck! Greg If you have a 1.9 L engine also,it is underneath. You have to crawl way under on the drivers side to get around something which somewhat obstructs it and it is sticking out sideways, fairly low on the engine. It is cylindrical and about 7 or 8 inches long when removed although when you look at installed,2 or 3 inches are sticking into the engine,so it does not appear as big.
