I have the same problem, I stop and restart the car to solve the problem until the next time.

I had a 2005 Saturn Ion. I got my ignition replaced in January 2009, soon after that my power steering started to spoatically go out. I was advised to replace the steering column. I replaced the car & will never buy another Saturn again. My daughter had her ignition replaced on her 2005 Ion last year during the winter and runs fine now for now. Why hasn't Saturn recalled these cars?

exact same thing! saturn told me to replace the steering column and motor! I am furious! It should be recalled as it is so dangerous! I am afraid to drive my car...it stops with no warning! its happened on exit ramps from the highway!!

I almost crashed this afternoon! Power steering light came on, I had no steering. This among the many other things that have gone wrong with this dumb car. I am afraid to drive it. I went to an auto parts store to get fluid, well there is no place to put it. I found out that it uses fuses, but I can not find any one who knows what kind or where to put them. The book they give you does not tell you a thing. They need to recall everyone of these death traps!

Power srering fluid turned clay color

Yes, this is a problem. The clear power steering fluid is a mineral oil base and the red Lucas additive is petroleum base. Your car uses the red petroleum base, which is actually Dexron ATF (automatic transmission fluid). Lucas is great stuff, the person at the parts store just doesn't know their stuff. You need to flush the system to save your pump from going out very prematurely.

Check with your local GM dealer.
They've found that updating to a new fluid (about $80.00)
Solved my steering clunking problem anyway.
Good luck!

this system can be tested for codes, I would suggest you have the dealer do this test, all the parts are very expensive so guessing is not a good idea. most probale cause is a wheel motion sensor on the steering column.

My 2001 astro lost it's brakes and power steering at the same time. any ideas?

check the power steering pump to see if the shaft broke. remove the belt and pull the pulley on the pump, it should not pull out of the pump. If it does you need a new pump
