Battery light and wheel lock

When I turned on my 06 liberty the battery light came on and the wheels were locked. Any clue on why this is and will a new battery fix the problem?

i don't think it's the alternator- the car turns on, runs like it has all power- I popped the hood and looked at everything I could, didn't see anything hanging, nothing over heated, no strange smells. i there a way I can check the alternator belt?

  • eas1014 Sep 15, 2008

just to clarify- the belt you are referring to is the long one that wraps around several wheel looking peices on the front of the engine/alternator. In other words, I popped the hood and looked down and there was a long belt and it looked new, not worn, not stressed, not broke. Am I checking the right one?

  • eas1014 Sep 15, 2008

yes, sounds just like it always does- i'm going to replace the battery- thought maybe it's low and that's why the light came on

  • eas1014 Sep 15, 2008

that's why i'm so confused- I have full power, the car goes in gear, the belt is fine, sounds fine, drove it to work this morning with no problems. I have no idea what's wrong with it.

  • eas1014 Sep 15, 2008

i did restart and check the power steering fluid- it's okay. the wheel won't turn- like it's locked when the car is off.

The belt of the alternator broke.

the battery light is the indication that the alternator is not charging and the wheels were not locked but very hard to turn because the power steering is not turning also. they could be using the same belt.

solution: replace the belt.

tnx 4 using fixya,

its not the alternator but the belt that is turning it. find the alternator and look at it's pulley.
see if there is a belt in there.

im guessing it uses serpentine belt and the power steering has no belt too since the serpentine belt is one big flat belt for everything.

    please check the belt.

    tnx ,

    yup..that's the one.

so when the battery lighted up and the steering stuck, is the engine running?

    drcool

  • francis rivero Sep 15, 2008

you might be spending for an un-needed battery,

if your engine is starting and running then you dont need a battery.

if the alternator pulley is turning and the battery sign in the instrument panel is lighted up, then it is not charging because that is the indicator that the alternator is not charging.
but i'm confused why would the steering be hard to steer now?...hhmmnnn..

    keep me posted,

ok..now please start it again and check the battery sign if it is still light up and check the power steering fluid. if it is low, then there is the problem, it may have a leak. if it is full , check if it is just hard to turn or would not really turn at all as if the ignition key is not inserted and the steering wheel is really locked.

    tnx again

ok..so the steering lock could have been damaged. the key does not lift the locking pin to release the wheel column. is the battery sign still lighted up while the engine is runnig?

Why are the wheels locked on Jeep ? Won't even roll in Neutral!

so you did get the key to move enough and brakes on to move the shifter to neutral.
are you an the arctic circle, (i have a buddy there,) pop 100.
hand brake off,
park dis-engaged, neutral
if it dont move the brakes are locked
or one axle bearing is seized.
so jack up each wheel 1 by 1, and see if it turns
on flat ground, and other wheels chocked so car can not roll.
i bet all 4 can spin,
and you just can push this heavy pig. i can barely do my wrangler.
you tried to hand push a car?
lets work no starts

does it crank over in park/?
does the engine crank fast , while in the start position?
my guess is the park lock out is fooling you.
most cars the park lock up is complex now.
its really in park not neutral.
and the reason , blown fuse. my guess.
tell all that works key, on in details
head lights, not just my lights work say HEAD
they draw like 10 amps of current, about 100x more that other lights.

even better
does engines start with jumper cables, jumped from a running car.
donor car.
can AAA start car?
if yes, post that first. all else is effect not cause.

My 2003 jeep liberty key wont turn its locked

try to jiggle the steering wheel
sometimes the key mechanism gets held up because the wheels are turned at an angle and are pressing against the key slot causing it to lock
happens all the time with my car

The shifter in my Jeep Liberty get stuck and will

this is caused by the steering wheel not locking, try moving the steering wheel one way and locking it, then it will start and you can shift it outta park.

Cannot get key to turn in jeep. Have already driven it numerous times today, suddenly can't move steering wheel or gear shift and key will not turn. Help!

Try turning the steering wheel (hard) right and left while turning the key. Steering lock , and ignition lock work in conjunction with each other.

We tow a 2004 Jeep Liberty Renegade behind our motorhome. Twice now, the front wheels have locked on us while towing. Transfer case was in N, transmission in P, key in the On position, all as described in...

I don't have towing specs on yours, but I have never seen a requirement that the key be "on" unless there is a position where the wheels are free but the electrical system is not on. The steering needs to be able to turn, but having the electrical system on, it's possible that the abs system is somehow locking up the wheels (reading wheel speed and comparing it to no driveshaft speed) To verify my theory, if it's impossible to not have the key all the way on, I'd try pulling the abs relay or fuse and see if it still happens. Also, on long tows with the electrical system on you may need to re-charge the battery (another reason I can't understand why they would tell you to have the key on)
Good luck with this...perhaps an rv guy will pick up on your post and give you a better answer.

Key won't turn and steering wheel is locked

Have you tried wiggling the steering wheel at the same time as you turn the key? Have you tried pushing on the gear shift lever, to make sure it's all the way in park?

Key won't turn in 2002 Jeep Liberty, can't start. Battery seems fine (at least enough power for clock, dome lights, and power locks), and vehicle operated normally a few hours earlier. Key simply won't...

put the key in the ignition and tap the key farther into the cylinder and turn. should work. seems like a chrysler problem! a handy tow truck driver showed me this solution last night. you can have the cylinder replaced if this keeps happening or just keep a handy-dandy whacking object in your center console for just such an occassion!
