You need an airflow meter. unplug the airflow meter start up your car it should still be the same. this action wont damage your car. hence telling u that when plugged in there is no differance.

I have a BMW 316 (with engine of 318i), it is consuming lot of petrol, the mechanic advised to change the flow meter, is it right?

Hello,

The job of a flow meter is to read the rate of flow of liquid in the car, so it will only show you the rate of flow not reducing the rate at which the car consumes petrol.

Also take note that there are some things that could be on in the car that consumes petrol for instance the air conditioner of your car. Know also that the rate at which a car consumes fuel is high when the atmosphere is cold, because it requires a level of revving to heat up the engine and that consumes petrol.

Run a general servicing of your engine, that should help you detect what exactly the problem is and then you will be able to know how to resolve the problem.

Take care and good luck

check gig flexi hose between air mass meter and engine, it has a tendency to split, also try disconnecting air mass meter plug, if it runs better without it mass meter may be faulty, try replacing it with a known good one
