I had the same problem with the same car. It wouldn't go into gear other times it was in gear but didn't feel like it. The problem was at the cable end where it attaches to tranny. They factory installed rubber bushing to hold it in gear. A buddy tack welded the fork looking ends and the problem was solved. If you want to do it the correct way, install a new cable. The cable which I am speaking of are the two on the back side of the tranny <towards the firewall side>

so can you start car in gear with clutch depressed.?
yes, no. (or jerks car body)(
"cant"
does that mean tranny is stuck in netural/
or does it mean the clutch drags and the shifter will not shift in any gear? or grinds>
or cant means the clutch slips in all 5 gears and Reverse.?

I have a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder 2.4 Non turbo sohc fwd.I rebuilt the engine from scratch, The tranny was shot. I got a junkyard transmission and they said that the car was driven in. Here's where...

2 things; If you jack up one front wheel, stick it in gear, does it try and turn the engine? If it does then the trans is turning. Did you check the trans operated in all gears before you fitted it?

Next, is it possible the clutch friction plate is in backwards. If so then the raised side that holds the damper springs is hard up against the fly wheel and causing the drag that prevents the clutch from releasing.
I cant help with info as to whether the trans is a fit but while you are underneath the hood, look and see if the clutch arm appears to move the right amount when the pedal is pressed. The only other thing I can think of is that the trans is seized somehow. You can test this while its jacked up by starting up on idle with it in gear, the raised wheel will turn.. Try this in all gears but BE CAREFUL with it on jacks, better to have jackstands under both sides.

Automatic transmission not shifting gears

Check the level and condition of the transmission fluid and if necessary the transmission fluid. Check the condition of the gears within the transmission (cracked, damaged) and change the gear cluster if necessary.

Clutch cable geo tracker

don't want to shift? fills a huge basket ,
1: grinds?
2: can't get in to some gears.? or all gears.? (engine running and not)?
3: clutch drags, clutch slips kills all gears, or just 5th.
drag kills them all and reverse 1st , its the canary gear. !! non synchro
4: noise.? or chatter, ****,larchig, or throwout hash ,?

here is the clutch page, link below.

the #1 failure for a gear not Selecting is a $5 fix.
the tip of the shifter shaft, plastic POS is broken, bar none this failure,#1 and sold only at SUZ, get em' while you can they are chapter 11 ANDGM/GEO is brain dead , ask them , and you get blank stares.

this can be proven, by selecting the gears by hand. running.
if failure, cant move those fork rods?
running? only
if you cant, the clutch is dragging. see why?
works stalled means the clutch drags.
can you shift to 1st stalled, start engine drive off can you get any gear? yes,if yes , constantly? with no grinding, the clutch is ok.

to do that manual shifter off test test the shifter must be removed.

the we get to the cable.
see the 1inch rule here, no guessing.
play set to spec, and you floor the pedal , person 2 sees 1 inch travel, (END new cable worry)
if it moves 1inch and the tranny can not be SELECTED.
the clutch is bad, if you can select only stalled motor.
if selection fails all time, stalled and running, the tranny is siezed.
covers every fail logged by 1000s of users

Can't change gear and very bad smell on 1988 mitsubishi mirage

The sounds like the cluch went bad. the smell and the reason you cant shift gears is due to the clutch. the clutch is burning and thats the smell, when the clutch gets low and slips it smells and sometimes it just blows apart due to wear. have the clutch checked and you will find it needs replacing. hope this is helpful have a good day.

I have a manuel 5 speed 1997 mirage. I am 64 year old female that is tripping because of my just happen problem. My clutch is disengaging fine. I am in 1 st gear and cant do anything else. Reverse was the...

You might have a bad clutch because even if it disengage, You still will face the symptoms you describe Above. I would check clutch for any Air in the line if you have a haydrolic clutch and for a loose cable if you have a cable. If all of the above are fine then you might have a bad Synchronize inside the transmission and usually you need to take it apart and rebuild it. Sorry Man and good luck

Clutch or tranny

Ok, Clutch engagement point should be midway or just before midway in relation to total travel.(pretty much the same in any clutch vehicle) assuming that if put in lets say 1st gear, with clutch in,then engine started, when clutch is released, car does not move but there are no unusual noises (grinding from inside trans.) If this is the case, I'd first check linkage for adjustment. If OK, remove the trans and look inside for broken gears, excessive metal debris etc.If shift rails are internal it could be that shift forks are sliding on rails and failing to engage synchros.
