2000 Chevrolet Malibu turn signal problem, please help

I have a 2000 Chev Malibu and I am having problems with the turn signals, they work.....most of the time. I can start up the car and they all work all indicator lights are working and there are no burnt bulbs. I have checked all the fuzes and i cant seem to find anything else wrong. I thought it may be the flashers but dont know why it would just stop working while i was driving. Then after i stop and shut off the car and restart it they work again.

please help, any info would be appreciated

Thanks again

    Gill,

I have the same problem with my 01 malibu. Would it be the same solution for me? Same GM part number too?

The hazard flasher clicks erratically when the ignition switch is turned on and when the turn signals or the hazard flasher are not engaged.

Look in your owners manual and replace the flasher unit or just switch it with the emergency flasher relay to test. good luck

im sorry about that its different from the 1998 model we had in the shop
i ran a TSB and here is what i found.
2000 CHEVROLET MALIBU -- By letter dated August 27, 2003, GM
notified the Agency that it is conducting a voluntary safety recall (NHTSA
recall no. 03V327) involving certain model year (MY) 2000-2001 Chevrolet Malibu,
Oldsmobile Alero, and Pontiac Grand Am.GM's recall covers 670,740 vehicles
manufactured beginning February 1, 2000 through May 1, 2001 (Alero and Grand Am)
and February 1, 2000 through May 31, 2001 (Malibu).GM reports that turn signal
failure is due to solder joint cracking in the hazard switch, and has identified
rapid temperature transitions of the hazard switch and the soldering process as
the cause of cracking.electrical current to the turn signals flows through the
hazard switch and an open circuit in the hazard switch will cause the exterior
turn/hazard lamps to become intermittent or inoperative.GM will replace the
hazard switch on all involved vehicles

All the other answer are right .Its an intermedit problem with the flasher unit or units .It works sometimes but not all of the time bad connections .Possibily heater core issues leaking = corrosion

Turn on the switch for the signal(Left or Right), smack the middle of the dashboard next to the hazard switch till the signal turns on. This is just a temporary fix, try it but becareful to NOT set off the airbags

I had this problem on my 2003 Malibu and it was making me crazy. The dash lights for turn signals were even starting to flash intermittently with the clicking.

I did NOT need to open the dash. The problem was not the hazard switch. The problem was crud in the multifunction switch where grease and dirt had caked in and were causing short circuiting. Clean out the gunk with Qtip and alcohol and it works like new.

This is a temporary fix for 2000 Malibu owners, I use it because it's a cheap quick way to get my indicators to work. It is tied into your hazards....so what I do is hit the hazard button while my indicator is "on" until it starts to work. I usually do this two-three times a week. It's free and quick but unfortunately temporary. Hope that helps those who are on a tight budget... :)

2001 Malibu - turn signal & horn problems

Google Service Bulletin No. 04098A. There is a recall for the hazard switch. My car's vin is not within the range, but I have the blinker problem. I was told by the Chev. 800 number that if a dealer determines that is the problem they will replace it. You can also buy the switch for about $20 and replace it yourself if you don't want to have to deal with a service dept.
