The p0171 code is for a fuel system lean code......possible causes are a cracked exhaust manifold.....bad o2 sensor...bad coolant temp sensor fuel pump.....lean fuel can cause the other codes you have for misfires

Car sputters when engine is cold and fine when warm

If your vehicle has a carburetor, I'd say you've got a problem with your choke, specifically your cold/curb idle dashpot. What is your fuel system, "air mixture problems" sounds like a carburetor to me.

Misfires when cold

Just means it isn't warmed up yet when sputters and misfires. Most likely a bad connection on the temperature sending unit in the engine or that sending unit is faulty. This sending unit tells the computer when engine is warm or cold and has to be functional. When working properly, it tells the computer to put engine in cold start mode, which it is not doing. The sensor is stuck in open position or warm mode and not giving the engine enough fuel when cold making it misfire and sputter. Fix that and you'll have no other problems with revving either.

98 jeep cherokee overheating. also engine losing power and sputtering. also no heat

Need to add some coolant. If there is coolant, then you need to check waterpump and make sure belt is still on it and turning.

1972 olds 98 455ci starts and runs fine when its cold but once i've driven it for awhile it starts sputtering like its running out of gas

sounds like a vapor lock. older cars needed a set of points . they kept firing times in sync with fuel delivery , valves opening/closing try that.
