Question about 1991 Dodge Stealth

Open Question

1991 Dodge Stealth SOHC Ignition Problem

The engine turns over but there's no spark.

  1. The car died, wouldn't even turn over.
  2. We tapped the scan connector at pins 1 and 12 initially and the voltmeter reading indicated a bad ECU.
  3. We shipped it to a company in Florida who repaired it. The engine now turns over but with no spark.
  4. With a voltmeter connected to pins 1 and 12 on the diagnostic connector and the ignition on, the needle fluctuates at a steady rate between 2 volts and 10 volts, indicating no codes present.
  5. The ignition coil primary and secondary resistance is correct.
  6. Connecting 12V to the primary and then disconnecting it generates sparks at a plug connected to the coil.
  7. We successfully tested the (Ignition Control Module) using a 1.5V battery to forward bias the power transistor and an ohmmeter to check for a drop in resistance, per the documented procedure.
a) The voltmeter indicates no codes present at the diagnostic plug. The There are diagnostic trouble codes for the crank angle sensor and TDC sensor which are part of the distributor. If I disconnect them, why do I still get no codes at the diagnostic plug?

b) The manual says to "check the distributor". How do you do that? I don't have any special tools.

c) Could a bad condensor/noise filter cause this problem?

d) The manual lists a Theft Deterrent system. I haven't explored that yet but could that system kill the ignition without generating diagnostic error codes?

SOURCE: died while driving

while engine is running grab the wire harness that leads into the distributor housing with a pair of needle nose pliers and wiggle the wires!!
if the engine stumbles or stalls that is your prob!!!
go to parts store and get a magnetic pickup assembly!!
i think they call it something else but its the same concept, just different because it's a dodge thing!!!

SOURCE: 01 Dodge Intrepid with 2.7l V6 turns over but

The coils only power up during cranking check that first. If it sounds funny cranking,ie. cranks faster or slower than usual, then he's probably right about the timing belt. If it jumped the heads need to be replaced or rebuilt, both costly. Would be cheaper to put a used engine in.

SOURCE: 97 plymouth voyager. no spark to cylinders

It sounds like you're on the right track with the crank sensor.Does the car have injector pulse? A bad crank sensor will also cause no pulse.

I have a 94 stealth and the other day I was driving and it just died. It didn't sputter or anything. It died during take off from a stop sign and I can't get it to start anymore. It cranks but doesn't seem...

Check that the crankshaft sensor is ok by replacing with another one.

The engine will not produce spark if the crankshaft sensor is not sensing rotation of the engine.

1991 Dodge Stealth overheating

if you think the fans are your problem, first thing is to check the system with a hand computer, with that you can activate the fans,or run test on each part of the system.
your fans will not come on until 212 you need a thermometer to verify temp of engine water, next check the engine temp sensor,if it doesn't see that temp it won't tell the computer to turn the fans on.if you have checked the fuses with a test light, for the fans, and the fan fan is a manual override,it will come on as soon as you turn the A/C on,then they have low speed and high.

You need four things to get combustion in the engine - proper timing, air, spark, and fuel. First, check for an engine error code. If there is none, check for spark by pulling out a spark plug wire and place the lead near a ground. If you have a spark while the engine turns over, then that's one component down. If you don't, check the coil for a spark. If you don't get it there, replace the coil. Similarly, check the fuel filter and air filter. If nothing's turning up, then look at the timing belt.
