Sounds like fuel pump. Under hood on fuel line you will see a cap like on a tire nozzle. Remove the cap and push on center pin. Be careful may be under pressure. If fuel sprays out pump is good. You may have to have someone tring to start car at same time. This could be dangerous if gas sprays on motor.
You should never run car on empty. Its bad in so many ways. Its cheeper to keep gas in your car than to change a fuel pump.

if its below empty u would have drained the pump out you have to atleast have half a tank now and keep winding engine till the gas goes up the tubes again the tank and the tubes will be dry as a bone

Ok I changed my fuel pump and sending unit on my 97 GMC jimmy because I thought my sending unit was screwed so I put the new on in and put 35.00 worth of gas in it drove it home a mile and shut the truck...

Do you have a Chiltons/Haynes repair manual for this vehicle? If not, get one as there are a few problems that could cause gauge malfunction. The obvious one is the fuse or a relay. As to the broken/missing vacuum fitting. I would think that could have an impact since these are closed systems. But generally it would give a check engine warning with the appropriate code. Or it may be something as simple as a lose wire.

Why is gas gauge not working correctly since fuelpump was replaced.

Is this a flex fuel vehicle. If so, call the dealership and ask the parts dept. if there is a gauge module (perhaps behind the instrument cluster). This may be the culprit and needs to be replaced.

sounds like you have a restriction in the fuel inlet pipe,( maybe air locking) also your tank sender unit neads replacing to fix you gauge fault, or it maybe that it has something that is not alowingf it to move freely inside the tank, have a good look inside when low on fuel. through the hole where the sender is fitted.

1991 Jeep Fuel Control Issue

Hey Mudkicker,

Who ever thought of putting an electric fuel pump inside a tank of gas........

Check your other gauges for accuracy. They do that when a ground is loose.

Check the wiring from the fuel tank along the longitudinal frame for frays and shorts. Plugs are secured.

Under the hood, passenger side, check the fuel pump relay. Switch it with one of the others to test it.

Bring the vehicle to an auto parts store. Ask them to break out he code reader. Check for diag codes

Gas Gauge Trouble

yes the most likly cause is that the fuel level sensor is faulty i would put a gas can in the back and go for a drive the a shop and have them check it. but i think if the truck wont take any more fuel it will be a faulty fuel level sensor.

Seccurity light staying on car starts and shuts right off gas gauge shows empty

Hello You can try resetting the security system by turning the key on and leaving it in the run position for 15 to 20 minutes, and then just start the truck don't turn to the off position until you have started the truck. after that all should be fine, And remember use the key with the chip on it too. Hope that gets you up and running. Thanks for using Fix Ya bear001
