Sounds like fuel pump. Under hood on fuel line you will see a cap like on a tire nozzle. Remove the cap and push on center pin. Be careful may be under pressure. If fuel sprays out pump is good. You may have to have someone tring to start car at same time. This could be dangerous if gas sprays on motor.
You should never run car on empty. Its bad in so many ways. Its cheeper to keep gas in your car than to change a fuel pump.

how much gas you put in?
if its below empty u would have drained the pump out you have to atleast have half a tank now and keep winding engine till the gas goes up the tubes again the tank and the tubes will be dry as a bone
