Also keep this in mind when setting the 4.3 if its the vortec Set timing under the following conditions:

* Normal operating temperature.
* Air cleaner installed.
* A/C "OFF."
* Transmission in neutral.
* Disconnect SET TIMING connector.

The location of the set timing connector is inside the cab where the heater box and the carpet meet on the passenger side floor. Pull carpet back to expose the single wire and connectors on the outside of the control module harness. The wire colors are tan with a black stripe. DO NOT disconnect 4 wire connector at distributor. (connector is sometimes found hanging right in front of the blower motor)

Connect timing light and adjust as necessary by loosening hold down bolt and rotating distributor. Tighten hold down and recheck the timing. Stop the engine and connect SET TIMING connector. Clear control module trouble code by disconnecting control module power source. With engine at operating temperature, drive vehicle at part throttle with moderate acceleration and decelerate to idle condition. This will "teach" the control module and return the engine to normal performance.

    I assume your trying to locate your timing marks. On the Bottom Pully on your Engine where your Belt or Belts run, Behind where the Pully is Mounted to is your Harmonica Balancer ,On that Harmonic Balancer you'll find your Timing Marks,Clean it all the way around it with a Degreaser wipe it off rotate your engine a bit at a time and line up your timing marks with the Pointer which you'll also see ,It just looks like a half Triangle or a Round Pin. Pointing towards your Timing Marks. TDC =Top Dead Center.

    on the timing plate there are 3 notches all the marks are gone whitch notch is tdc ?? also on the damper there are 2 marks 1 large 1 small whitch one do you use for tining

  • Anonymous Sep 14, 2011

    the center one is TDC, the other 2 are 5 degrees either way , + or - , Mine just has one line,, so lemme check on the bottom balancer one for you

    Thanks for the info " I certainly appreciate it.

    ok,, heres the info I got from a mechanic in the Chevy vortec forum, basically,, the 2 lines on the balancer are for when you hook up the timing light, ( after setting the timing, the second mark will show you the advance when the rpm's are increased, which makes sense to me,, anyway , here are the details he sent me,
    line up the two timing marks on the balancer with the the tabs on the timing cover... then, on the inside of the distributor housing, on the passenger side, there is a little arrow with the #6 stamped on it partruding inward... line the rotor button up with that... now your timing should be correct and the computer will take care of the little bit of adjustment. (even though #1 cylinder is on the driverside, it fires on the passenger side right next to #6 cylinder, if you look on the cap the #1 point travels over to that side). follow those steps, and you know your distributor will be set right... if problem still exists i would assume something internally is off, like the timing chain or the balancer spun.

    Hope that gets ya up and running!!

There is no specified timing marks,there is a special tool required to align the crankshaft and the camshafts.Snap on sells a tool for this application but it is very expensive.I would suggest you have a repair shop do this for you.

Fuel gauge not working all the time.

This is a normal concern.
The instrument cluster uses 4 different operating modes to calculate the fuel level:
Anti-slosh (default mode)
Key OFF fueling
Key ON fueling
Recovery
After a fuel fill up, the time for the fuel gauge to move from empty (E) to full (F) ranges from 2 seconds to 55 minutes depending on which operating mode the fuel gauge is in.
The default fuel gauge mode is called the anti-slosh mode. To prevent fuel gauge changes from fuel slosh (gauge instability due to changes in fuel sender readings caused by fuel moving around in the tank), the fuel gauge takes approximately 55 minutes to go from empty (E) to full (F).
The key OFF fueling mode (2 seconds to read empty [E] to full [F]) requires 3 conditions be met:
The key must be in the OFF position throughout the entire refueling of the vehicle.
At least 15% of the vehicle's fuel capacity must be added to the fuel tank.
The instrument cluster must receive a valid key ON fuel sender reading within 1 second of the key being put into the RUN position. The key ON sample readings are considered valid if the fuel sender reading is between 15 ohms ± 2 ohms and 160 ohms ± 4 ohms.
If these conditions are not met, the fuel gauge stays in the anti-slosh mode, which results in a slow to read full (F) event.
The key ON fueling mode (approximately 90 seconds to read empty [E] to full [F]) requires 3 conditions be met:
The transmission is in PARK (P).
The key is in the RUN position.
At least 15% of the vehicle's fuel capacity must be added to the fuel tank.
In key ON fueling mode, a 30-second timer activates after the transmission is put into the PARK (P) position (automatic transmissions). When the 30-second time has elapsed and at least 15% of the vehicle's fuel capacity has been added, the fuel gauge response time is 90 seconds to read from empty (E) to full (F). When the transmission is shifted out of PARK (P), the fuel gauge strategy reverts to the anti-slosh mode. The key on refueling mode prevents slow to read full events from happening if the customer refuels the vehicle with the key in the RUN position.
Recovery mode is incorporated into the instrument cluster strategy to recover from a missing fuel level input during a refueling event. Missing fuel level inputs result from intermittent opens in the fuel sender or its circuits. Recovery mode (empty [E] to full [F] approximately 20 minutes) is initiated when the following 2 conditions are met:
The instrument cluster is in the anti-slosh (default) mode.
The actual fuel level in the tank is greater than what is being displayed by the fuel gauge

Valve timing

hi there,

you have a crank sensor as well, it reads from a plate that's bolted to you crank
shaft. Now if that plate is the wrong way around the sensor is not picking up movement from the crank, it could also be that the sensor aren't close enough
to take a reading... Do not put to close as the plate will damage it... you will see the plate has 3 points on it.... this happened to me and my car stood for two days!!!

Timing marks

this is a complex fix. if the timing belt is off, you will have to align both of the cams (V6??) to their respective notches on the back plate that protects the belt. You must also align the crank shaft to TDC, top dead center. Put the belt on (with tensioner off) then put tensioner on and release allen key. turn the engine by hand or using the starter two full rotations, the notches on the tops of the cam pulleys should be perfectly alligned with the notches on the back plate. if not, you missed a notch in the wrong spot and have to try again.

i've done this twice, once on a lexus es250 v6, and again on my 94 camry, its one of the hardest things i've ever done when repairing cars. be patient, have a friend help, don't get frustrated. if you really cant get it, have a mechanic come to your house and drop him a few bills to help you. you'll be glad you did
