Possible loose connection at the alternator, or wire grounding out that should not be.

SOUND LIKE DEAD BATTERY.HAVE BATTERY CHECKED AND REPLACED.MAKE SURE ALTERNATOR CHARGING BATTERY.WITH ENGINE IDLING BATTERY VOLTAGE OUTPUT AT BATTERY SHOULD BE 13.5 - 14.5 VOLTS. IF NOT CHECK ALTERNATOR BATTERY FEED WIRE AND VOLTAGE REGULATOR WIRES FOR DAMAGE OR LOOSE CONNECTIONS,CHECK ALTERNATOR FUSE AND MAKE SURE ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT NOT LOOSE SLIPPING OR BROKEN.

79 c10 - guages all read low except gas guage which reasd high. Truck runs fine. Lights work, even the dash lights work good.

It sounds like you might have a poor ground connection somewhere. You can test each individual gauge for full travel by grounding the wire the goes the each gauges individual sender. In other words to check the temp gauge, ground the wire that goes to the temp sender. The temp sender is in the left cylinder head between the #1 and #2 spark plug ( looks like a brass pipe plug with a single wire coming from it) if you ground the wire with the key on (engine off) the gauge should go to the end of the scale (hot) with the wire off it should go to full cold. You can do this with the gas gauge too but not the amp gauge or volt meter. If the volt gauge is reading low (if it has one) and you know that battery voltage is good (don't guess, measure with a multi-meter) there has to be a poor connection somewhere.

Volt gage jumping arround less notice when under load

I would first suggest using a volt /amp meter and test the voltage from the large wire off the back of the Alternator. You will need a second person to help feather the throttle to change the engine speed. You should see a steady increase in voltage from 12.6 to 14.5V when the idle is increased. If the voltage jumps around on the meter then chances are you have a bad voltage regulator in the Alternator and need to replace it. If the voltage is normal and doesn't bounce around then you have a faulty gauge in the dash.

Battery light goes on somwtimes when driving and the gauges jump this has just started to happen, other gauge lights have also been lightng up

Inspect for loose alternator belt, belt tenstioner.

Loose the belt and check for free play and smooth turning on alternator.

Clean and tighten battery connectors.

Check DC voltage at idle,it should be between 13.8V to 14.2V.

====
For the last test, you may need a helper.

Flip the DVM meter to AC scale to 1V AC resolution to check for damage diodes that can cause AC ripple voltage.

The reading should be under 0.1V AC at 1500-3000 rpm

Battery light comes on then goes off then comes back on put new battery in and altinator

You need to connect a meter across the battery terminals to determine whether the battery is being charged by the alternator. Compare the voltage at rest to that obtained when the engine is running. It should be about 12 volts at rest and then rise to approximately 14 volts. The voltage regulator (which controls how much voltage is being produced by the alternator and operates the charge lamp on the dashboard) on some vehicles is separate to the alternator. If the voltage is rising to within specifications as previously mentioned, the wiring to the lamp may be being earthed somewhere along it`s run to the alternator/regulator. Ian

When I turn the ignition on the battery light comes on and the voltage gauge drops between 9 & 14. Then it slowly goes up to around 14. I replaced the battery. Alternator??

take volt meter check voltage on batt.while truck is idling, voltage should be between 13.5-14.5v,turn headlights on it should stay in that range if it goes below, check for bad wire connection at alt.,if conn. are ok,theres a good chance alt. not charging properly!before doing test make sure batt.is full charge!

did you check the transmission heat sensor or the intake air sensor these can be incorporated with temp guage on some vehicles

but theres also the problem of alternator is getting ready to give only
take an electro meter and hook up to cigarette lighter with a 2 post power maker and watch the voltage as your driving try to recreate the conditions that brought this about if the reading changes dramatically this will tell your alternator will need to be replaced at some point also dead cells in battery creates this little bump in electrical
